occupation

Marija is a German - Swiss film drama from 2016 . It deals with moral questions of migration by portraying the eponymous main character Marija from the Ukraine trying to build an existence free from dependency and exploitation in Dortmund's northern city as a woman.

action

Marija lives as a Ukrainian immigrant in the north of Dortmund , a problematic area for migrants. Water drips from the ceiling in her bathroom. As a poorly paid hotel maid, she dreams of having her own hairdressing salon. But that is a long way off when she loses her job because a colleague who is also a migrant whistles about her petty thefts.

She doggedly approaches the Turkish landlord Cem when he ruthlessly storms her apartment to collect arrears in rent that Marija cannot afford. Cem promptly softens and hires her for occasional help with other tenants in return for payment, be it translating during an illegal doctor's visit or filling out child benefit applications.

As a companion to a party, she gets to know Cem's business partner Georg, who immediately sees through her "paid" relationship. He recruits Marija, who has studied and speaks good German and Russian, for a delicate negotiation for a lucrative Cem Russian building project. Marija proves to be charming and tough at the same time, the plan succeeds. Georg is impressed and is increasingly making private advances, which Marija for her part touches, while she coolly rejects Cem's offer for a vacation for two.

The convicted Georg supports Marija morally and with money in her dream of a hairdressing salon, a little joy and happiness shimmer. But after an illegal employment control, which Marija escapes with difficulty, Georg ends up in prison again, which is a horror for him. He wants a clean sweep. The stashed cash is to be used as bail for the release and he is already planning a new existence in Mallorca. Marija's commitment to the worker Igor, the husband of Marija's pregnant friend Olga, who was mediated by her and who has now been deported, doesn't matter to him - and apparently also Marija's dream. When Olga gives up and Igor goes back to Ukraine, Marija uses Georg's money to help them and finally to found the hairdressing salon.

In the end Georg is released anyway and confronts Marija. Immediately she offers him the rest of his money and - given the alternative - decides almost without any problems for her independence with a hairdressing salon and against Georg, who is injured, angry and leaves the shop without his money.

production

Marija is the first feature film by the Swiss director Michael Koch . The production company Pandora Filmproduktion works with Hugofilm Productions, Little Shark Entertainment GmbH, WDR and Arte , who were involved in the production of the film as co-production companies.

In addition to the shooting at the main location in Dortmund, further recordings were made in Cologne .

Premieres

The film premiered on August 8, 2016 at the Locarno International Film Festival . In the same year the film was shown at other film festivals and at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. In Germany, Marija was shown on January 25, 2017 at the Max Ophüls Preis film festival in Saarbrücken and in February at the Berlin International Film Festival . After further premieres in cities such as Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Cologne, the cinema was released on March 9, 2017.

In June 2019, ARD took Marija on for the first time in a television program and showed her as part of the series "Film debut in the First" on its main channel Das Erste and two more times on One . In addition, the work was available in the ARD media library for a week after it was first broadcast .

reception

The film received consistently positive reviews. For example, wrote:

"The debut film is carried out by the outstanding leading actress who makes the dilemma of her character between self-assertion and loss of identity palpable with minimal effort."

- Alexandra Wach : Film service

“Politicians are discussing no-go areas in Germany, director Michael Koch shows them. Shows how people really live in districts where there are conflicts, the right of the fittest and an everyday life in a precarious situation. Marija von Michael Koch, who has only made short films so far, is almost excellent. "

- Michael Dlugosch : Filmrezension.de

For Alfred Schlienger and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Marija was “a haunting social and character study” in which “Margarita Breitkreiz shines”: “You don't forget this face so quickly. As resolute as it is vulnerable, as resistant as it is shy, dumbly compassionate or even dismissive as an icy wind. And everything in the finest nuances. ”When directing, he emphasized the ambivalence of the figure drawing as a“ particular strength ”and called the premiere in the Locarno competition“ already a nice recognition ”and the nomination for the Swiss film award “ deserved ”.

Awards
