Laval Airfield became an Air Force base during the German occupation . During the Battle of Britain from July to October 1940, it was the base of the Bf 110 of Stab and III. Group of Destroyer Squadron 76 (S. and III./ZG 76). In addition, there was courier season 5 in September . At the end of October, the I. Group of Jagdgeschwader 27 (I./JG 27) with their Bf 109E made a two-day stopover in Laval before the place became home to Fw 189A after more than a year in early 1942 . Initially, this was the 1st squadron of reconnaissance group 21 (1. (H) / 21) and then between March and May 1942 the 6th squadron of reconnaissance group 13 (6th (H) / 13).
In the run-up to the expected Allied invasion , Laval became a base for Bf 109Gs of Close Reconnaissance Group 13 in late April . The 3rd squadron was stationed here until mid-June 1944 and the group headquarters were also temporarily located here. The last unit stationed here was the III. Group of the Schlachtgeschwader 4 with their Fw 190F / G , which flew their fighter-bomber missions over the front here for the first two weeks after the start of the invasion .
After the liberation of the area, Laval became an airfield of the Ninth Air Force of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) as Airfield A.57 , the only air force stationed here from the end of August to the end of September 1944, the 47th Liaison Squadron .
