Colossal is a 2016 sci-fi film directed by Nacho Vigalondo and starring Anne Hathaway , Jason Sudeikis , Dan Stevens , Austin Stowell and Tim Blake Nelson that tells the story of Gloria, an unemployed young writer who inadvertently saw the appearance of a gigantic one Monsters on the other side of the world. In Germany, the film was distributed directly on DVD from December 1, 2017 .

action

The unemployed writer Gloria has a serious drinking problem. Her behavior causes her frustrated friend Tim to break up with her and evict her from her apartment in New York City . So Gloria is forced to return to her hometown in New Hampshire . She meets her childhood friend Oscar again, who now runs his late father's bar. Oscar tries to help Gloria by offering her an old television for her unfurnished house and a job at the bar, which Gloria accepts. Working at the bar makes Gloria's drinking problem worse. During each shift, she drinks with Oscar and his friends Garth and Joel until morning and then falls asleep on a bench near a children's playground.

At the same time, a huge reptile kaiju appears in Seoul , leaving death and destruction behind. Little by little, Gloria realizes that if she walks across the playground at exactly 8:05 a.m., the monster will manifest and the creature's movements will match her own. A little later, Gloria reveals her secret to Oscar and his friends. When Oscar steps into the playground, he makes a giant robot appear in Seoul. Gloria eventually tries to retaliate by letting the monster spell an apology in Korean, to the delight of South Koreans and the media. As a result, Gloria tries to avoid both the playground and the alcohol.

After spending a night with Joel, Gloria discovers that the drunken Oscar is using the robot to taunt South Korea. After a tense confrontation, Gloria manages to let him go. Oscar is jealous that something happened between Gloria and Joel. Later that night, while drunk, he insults his friends and demands that Gloria drink, threatening to return to the playground if she doesn't. The next morning a sober Oscar confesses his remorse and asks to forgive him. Gloria forcibly accepts his apology because Oscar's will to blackmail her doesn't seem broken.

Gloria's ex-boyfriend Tim shows up in town to see Gloria. Oscar provokes a confrontation that ends with the fact that he stages a large fireworks display in the bar. He later shows up at Gloria's house and tells her he's there to prevent her from returning to New York with Tim.

A flashback of 25 years shows that Oscar already showed destructive behavior as a child and that the two were struck by lightning near the playground, which is why they can now manifest their avatars in South Korea. The memory makes Gloria understand why the adult Oscar is violent and manipulative: he hates himself. She decides to leave town with Tim. Oscar comes to the playground in response. When Gloria follows, Oscar hits her and leaves her on the ground while he terrorizes Seoul.

Gloria flies to South Korea and apologizes to Tim for not coming. At 8:05 a.m. US time again, Oscar causes the giant robot to manifest in Seoul. When she goes to Oscar's avatar, Gloria makes her Kaiju reappear, this time in the playground. Holding Oscar in hand, Glorias Kaiju throws Oscar into the distance, causing the giant robot to be thrown into the sky and disappear from Seoul.

When her mission is complete, Gloria retreats to an empty bar in Seoul, takes her seat and promises the young waitress an incredible story.

criticism

The film received mixed to positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes lists 220 reviews, 80% of which are rated as positive, and sums them up as follows: “The extraordinary strangeness of Colossal can be confusing, but viewers who are not deterred may find that the genre-breaking implementation - and Anne Hathaway's appearance - make the film worth seeing. ”The online platform Metacritic determined a Metascore of 70% from 38 reviews, which stands for generally positive ratings.

revenue

The film grossed just over 4.7 million US dollars in the US alone . However, the profits did not meet the expectations of the producers; the film is - financially speaking - a flop.
