Bar Bahar ( Arabic بَر بَحَر, translit. Bar Bahar ( Earth and Sea ); Hebrew לא פה, לא שם, translit. Lo scham, Lo po pur ( Not here, not there ); international title: In Between ) is an Israeli - French drama from 2016 and the feature film debut of director Maysaloun Hamoud, who also wrote the screenplay. The film tells of three young Palestinian women who live together in Tel Aviv , Israel , with their lives caught between cultural openness, sexual freedom and the constraints of tradition.

action

The Palestinian women Laila and Salma live together in a shared flat in Tel Aviv. Laila is a lawyer , Salma is a DJane and a bartender, and both enjoy their freedom in Tel Aviv nightlife. When a room becomes available, Noor, a Muslim from Umm al-Fahm , a hard-working IT student in Tel Aviv and engaged to the conservative Wissam, moves into the flat. Despite their differences, the three women show solidarity in their striving for freedom and self-determination and the associated conflicts with traditional role models, social control and prejudices in Jewish society. Laila struggles with the patriarchal views of her friend, who only appears to be a progressive friend. Salma comes into conflict with her actually liberal Christian family when she brings her friend on a weekend visit. And Noor, who does not want to give up her studies and - infected by her roommates - her newly won freedoms, sees herself more and more cornered by her devout fiancé. When Wissam raped Noor, the three friends came up with a plan to get back at him.

production

Screenwriter and director Maysaloun Hamoud and executive producer Shlomi Elkabetz participated with the film project in 2015 at the Jerusalem Pitch Point , which is being held as part of the Jerusalem Film Festival in cooperation with the Israel Film Fund and the Jerusalem Film & Television Fund and the financial and creative promotion of promising Israeli film projects as a goal. Bar Bahar won the YAPIMLAB Award and the IFP Brooklyn Award and received corresponding financial support as well as support in the area of production .

The film was made in an Israeli-French co-production under the direction of the two production companies Deux Beaux Garçons Films and En Compagnie des Lamas . When casting the roles, Riyad Sliman and Maysaloun Hamoud deliberately looked for authentic actors with little experience who would apply to the individual characters and mainly resorted to theater actors . Sana Jammalieh , who played the character of Salma, and Aiman Daw , who played the supporting character of Saleh, had no previous acting experience.

Premiere celebrated Bar Bahar on the Toronto Film Festival on September 11 2016th

reception

Due to the portrayal of the progressive Palestinian underground scene in Israel and the open discussion of club culture , drug use and homosexuality - a novelty in Palestinian cinema - the film met with great criticism in conservative circles. The mayor of the Israeli city of Umm al-Fahm , from which the fictional character Noor comes from, declared the film Bar Bahar to be Haram . Maysaloun Hamoud received numerous death threats in the months following the film's release.

For this authentic representation of the everyday life of young, modern Palestinian women in Israel, who move between the open enjoyment of their freedoms, cultural prejudices and against the constant background of traditional values of their families, for the representation of the search for self-determination in life between two worlds , Bar Bahar and Maysaloun Hamoud have been critically acclaimed and have received numerous awards.

"For me the contradiction is not between Orient and Occident, but between conservatives and liberals."

- Maysaloun Hamoud

At Rotten Tomatoes, the film was able to convince 98 percent of the critics (as of January 2018).
