The Sebastiane Film Prize has been awarded since 2000 to outstanding feature films or documentaries that deal with the existence and reality of homosexuals , transgender people and bisexuals . It is awarded every September as part of the San Sebastián International Film Festival . A jury consisting of representatives from the festival departments Sección Oficial (official selection), Zabaltegui, Horizontes Latinos and Made in Spain will award the best films.

history

The idea for a gay and lesbian film prize to be awarded as part of the San Sebastian Film Festival ( Donostia Zinemaldia ) arose within the Gehitu association , the LGBT organization in the Basque Country . Following the example of since 1987 on the Berlinale awarded Teddy Award pricing films with LGBT background should give more attention and relevance in movie theaters as well as in the media.

The first film to be awarded the Sebastiane Film Prize was Krámpack (2000, German Nico and Dani ) by the Catalan director Cesc Gay . The film tells the sexual awakening of two teenagers in a humorous and sensitive manner. The jury for the award was composed of the writer Luis G. Martín, the film critic Begoña del Teso, Ángel Retamar from the magazine Zero and the Gehitu members Patricia García and David Montero.

The name of the film award was chosen based on the 1976 film of the same name, Sebastiane , the first film by British director Derek Jarman . In it, he developed an introspective portrait of the Roman soldier Sebastian, martyr of Christianity and medieval saint, whose image turned into a homoerotic icon over time. The Saint Sebastian is the patron saint and namesake of the city of Donostia-San Sebastián at the same time making them ideal for the venue of the festival and as a symbol of gay culture and is to represent the film award.

The price

The prize figure consists of a metal silhouette depicting the martyr Sebastian, namesake and patron saint of San Sebastián: a half-naked body whose torso is pierced by arrows. The background of the figure is formed by two blocks made of stainless steel, which simulate the two buildings of the Kursaal auditorium, the seat of the film festival.
