The list of balloon accidents includes accidents that occurred while ballooning , cluster ballooning or when handling large balloons .

May 25, 1824	01	01	Death of Harris (1824), (print, Paris, 1890s) During the ride on the Royal George hydrogen balloon from Vauxhall , London , the hydrogen gradually escaped from the balloon. The balloon drifted to Croydon , where it collided with an oak tree in Beddington Park near Carshalton . The English balloon pioneer and inventor Thomas Harris died and his 18-year-old fiancée Sophia Stocks was seriously injured.

December 1853	01	00	In Nimes the balloonist was M. Louis Deschamps cast out of his balloon.
June 29, 1856	01	00	The Ville de Paris balloon, controlled by Matias Perez, disappears in Cuba .
October 19, 1863	00	some	Félix Nadar's balloon crashed in the Lichtenmoor near Nienburg with a two-story gondola for approx. 80 people; there were injuries, Nadar and his wife were seriously injured.
April 15, 1875	02	01	Joseph Crocé-Spinelli , Théodore Sivel and Gaston Tissandier came to an altitude of about 8,000 meters. The lack of oxygen killed two of the three balloonists.
July 14, 1897	03	00	Decline of the Eagle, 1897 Andrée's polar expedition of 1897 . Problems with icing led to the emergency landing. The three expedition members were then killed in the ice. Commons : Andrées polar expedition
0February 1, 1902	01	01	Zwijndrecht , Belgium: Hans Bartsch von Sigsfeld had to land on frozen ground in a storm and died, his passenger Franz Linke survived with minor injuries.
August 14, 1908	03	05	A balloon exploded at the Franco-British Exhibition . The pilot Lovelace and two other people died (one of them after several days), five other people were injured.
April 20, 1913	01	00	The balloonist Franz Weyland crashes in the Kaufunger Wald near Kassel because of a thunderstorm and is killed.
January 30, 1934	03	00	Osoaviahim-1 1934 hydrogen balloon before ascent On its maiden voyage, the Soviet hydrogen-filled balloon Osoaviahim-1 crashed after reaching an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000  feet ). The earth's stratosphere should be scientifically studied. The balloon lost control on the descent and the nacelle rotated rapidly, so that the crew's three drivers, Fedoseenko, Vasenko and Usyskin, could not parachute off, hit the ground at high speed and died instantly. July 18, 1938	04th	00	The Soviet experimental balloon VVA-1 drove from Zvenigorod to Donetsk , got caught in a power line and exploded.
0June 6, 1968	03	00	A gas balloon hit the Danube Tower at the International Airmail Exhibition in Vienna . US pilot Francis Shields, Ministerialrat Guntram Pammer and APA journalist Dieter Kasper died in free fall when the basket crashed from a height of 150 meters after the old connecting cables to the balloon had been torn off; an exit with a parachute was no longer possible. Iron bars had ripped open the shell.
20th September 1970	03	00	The Free Life balloon had to emerge during an attempt to cross the Atlantic . The three inmates Malcolm Brighton, Rodney Anderson and Pamela Brown were killed.
19th February 1974	01	00	The Light Heart balloon disappeared while attempting to cross the Atlantic. He was last seen by a freighter about 1,610 km west of the Canary Islands . The pilot was Thomas Leigh Gatch Jr.
02nd July 1982	00	00	Larry Walters wanted to ascend with about 45 weather balloons (cluster ballooning) tied to an aluminum garden chair from San Pedro near Los Angeles, California, only 30 meters above ground. After the bondage was torn off, he rose to an altitude of 4900 m, penetrated the airspace of Los Angeles Airport , two airliners reported the sighting, was able to destroy some balloons, sank and got caught in a power line with the balloon lines hanging down. A power failure was caused and he was able to climb to the ground unharmed. He was arrested, punished, and honored; lectured and sang.
03rd October 1982	04th	05	The explosion aboard a hot air balloon at a festival in Albuquerque , New Mexico killed four people and injured another five.
August 13, 1989	13	00	Two hot air balloons collide in Alice Springs , Australia. For an unexplained cause, two balloons are exactly on top of each other, while the upper side of the envelope of the lower balloon is touched by the basket of the upper balloon and slit open. The upper balloon can later land safely. The lower one loses the lifting gas, hot air, and thus buoyancy, through the hole in the envelope, and therefore in height and falls; all 13 people in the basket are killed. This was the worst balloon accident for 24 years before it was overtaken by the crash at Luxor on February 26, 2013.
0October 6, 1990	04th	03	A hot air balloon crashed due to a burner failure near Groß-Schweinbarth , Lower Austria . Four dead, three seriously injured.
May 20, 1991	02	00	In St. Michael ob Bleiburg , Carinthia, a balloon from two people from Salzburg got caught in a power line. Both die.
July 19, 1992	02	03	In Gorspen-Vahlsen a gas balloon crashes. There are two dead and three seriously injured.
November 23, 1992	01	00	Yoshikazu Suzuki started hanging on 23 helium balloons (cluster ballooning) from Lake Biwa , Japan, was last seen on November 25 by a Japanese Coast Guard aircraft 800 km over the Pacific at an altitude of 2500 to 4000 m and went missing.
May 21, 1993	04th	00	In bad weather, near Laa an der Thaya , Lower Austria, an emergency landing fails, the balloon crashes, killing four.
January 15, 1994	03	01	When attempting to land a hot air balloon near Osterburken , the burner explodes with a subsequent fire. Three people in the basket die, a fourth is able to save himself by jumping out of the basket and is slightly injured.
January 31, 1996	05	00	In one of the most serious balloon accidents in Switzerland, five people were killed near Lauterbrunnen BE when their hot air balloon was brought down by turbulence.
October 18, 1997	04th	00	Gas balloon crash near Nauen , four dead. The investigations showed that electromagnetic radiation from the Nauen radio station caused the cover to burn and the cords to melt, which led to the separation of the basket from the cover.
June 16, 1999	04th	00	A hot air balloon collides with a high voltage line near Ibbenbüren , four dead.
August 11, 2001	00	04th	Collision of a hot air balloon with a power line near the Bleilochtalsperre near Saalburg . The balloon pilot falls out of the basket and is seriously injured, the three passengers are slightly injured.
August 26, 2001	06th	00	In the Savoy region of southern France , a balloon hits a high-voltage power line and falls. Six dead.
0June 8, 2003	01	00	A five-year-old girl was carried away by a detached balloon in Mönchengladbach ; the child was found dead 50 km away in Hamminkeln .
August 13, 2003	02	01	In Furth near Böheimkirchen , St. Pölten district, Lower Austria, a balloon crashes. Two people die, a heavily pregnant woman is injured, and her unborn child survives.
July 23, 2004	01	00	In Lucerne , a tethered balloon was hurled against several buildings and a tree by strong gusts and pressed down several times. During the subsequent ascent, the tether tightened, a load-bearing part of the gondola being cut and a floor slab falling off. A passenger fell through the hole and died.
August 25, 2007	02	11	One of Canada's worst balloon accidents near Surrey , British Columbia kills two people and injures 11 others when their balloon catches fire and crashes while in motion.
April 20, 2008	01	00	The priest, human rights activist and skydiver Adelir Antônio de Carli (42) climbed on April 20 from Paranaguá , Brazil with 1000 different colored latex balloons ( cluster ballooning ) on a chair-like seat belt to advertise an action. A flight of 20 hours was intended, he reached 5000 m altitude, unexpected westerly wind drove him over the sea, after 90 km the last satellite telephone contact took place. He couldn't operate his GPS device. A part of his body was found in the sea on July 4th and could be identified from his clothing, and on July 29th via DNA comparison.
October 10, 2008	01	01	A hot air balloon collided with a power line during the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. One dead, one seriously injured.
October 14, 2009	04th	00	Shortly after take-off near Yangshuo in southern China, a balloon crashes. Four Dutch tourists die.
September 12, 2010	00	13	At Abbesbüttel , a hot air balloon is caught by a heavy gust of wind after landing and dragged across the ground; he crosses a residential area, collides with several houses and fences and comes to a halt on a garage wall. Of the 13 people in the basket, eight are seriously injured and five are slightly injured.
August 26, 2011	00	17th	Because of an upcoming thunderstorm, three hot air balloons have to make an emergency landing near Adelebsen ; in the process, they are hit by gusts and blown away and eight people in the basket are seriously injured and nine others slightly injured.
0January 6, 2012	11	00	A hot air balloon used for sightseeing tours crashed near the New Zealand town of Carterton . The balloon caught fire after touching a power line, rose steeply for a short time and then fell very quickly from a height of 150 m. All ten passengers and the pilot were killed. According to another source on January 7th.
23rd August 2012	06th	26th	A hot air balloon crashed near Ljubljana in Slovenia due to a sudden change in wind direction during a thunderstorm; four dead, 28 injured. Two injured die in the hospital.

April 28, 2013	02	0?	Balloon crash with 7 occupants in the Pacific off Peru : The journey started in the morning in the province of Cañete south of Lima, the pilot reported poor visibility in the fog over the sea and radio contact broke off. Five women were rescued from the water at dawn the next day, otherwise unharmed; the pilot and the brother of the balloon operator who had tried to swim to the bank were missing. Neither life jackets nor a satellite tracking system are said to have been on board.

0August 6, 2013	01	04th	Balloon crash near Montbovon in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland from a height of 40 meters after contact with a high-voltage line. One dead, four seriously injured.
22nd August 2013	01	00	Oberndorf , Tyrol , Austria: passengers got off, they and a volunteer (66) held the basket from outside. The pilot heated the balloon again in order to drive closer to the road, the vehicle rose another 70 m, from where the helper fell. In another source, the killed helper is referred to as an "employee of the organizer".
0May 9, 2014	03	00	Balloon crash at a show at a balloon festival in Virginia , USA: three dead after a collision with a power line, which led to the explosion and the crash of the burning gondola.
03rd July 2015	00	09	Crash of a hot air balloon in Sommerfeld (Kremmen) in the Oberhavel , Germany due to landing difficulties. All nine passengers were injured, three of them seriously.
July 30, 2016	16	00	A hot air balloon fire and crash caused by a high voltage overhead line in Lockhart , Texas . Part of the balloon and / or basket got caught in the pipes and burned. All 16 people in the basket died, including the pilot who was also the owner of the balloon company. Worst balloon accident in US history. The NTSB investigation found that poor visibility due to fog and low cloud cover may have contributed to the collision.

June 16, 2018	00	06th	Crash of a hot air balloon near Füchtdorf (or Sassenberg ), Münsterland due to wind and rain, three seriously and three slightly injured.
04th June 2019	00	11	Landing accident of a hot air balloon near Marsberg . The basket overturns several times on landing and catches fire. All eleven inmates are injured, six of them seriously, two at times in mortal danger. The pilot is said to have already been involved in the accident at Adelebsen 2011 (sd).
26th August 2019	00	02	Landing accident of a hot air balloon with a Swiss pilot (69) and 6 passengers from Austria in Raggal , A. The basket comes up several times on a sloping meadow with road serpentines and takes off again three times. - The second time it touches the ground, the cage tilts; when it is lifted off again, a passenger (64) hangs on the outside of the cage, falls about 3–4 m down on the embankment and breaks his arm. Another person is hanging on a tether, dragging on the floor, shuttling and is finally lifted off the floor a little. After the 4th floor contact, the basket is only lifted on one side and only moved a little. A resident films the landing.
August 16, 2020	01	06th	Landing accident of a hot air balloon near Urbar, near Loreley, 45 km from Koblenz. During a severe thunderstorm, the balloon is caught in a gust of wind and crashes. The pilot dies, all 6 passengers are injured, two of them seriously.
