1950

  • (A) March 12 - In an Avro Tudor V of British fair Flight (G-AKBY) it came in to land at Llandow , Wales , United Kingdom to stall and crash. 75 of the 78 passengers and all 5 crew members were killed. The pilots had lost control of the completely overloaded machine, which also had its center of gravity well below the permissible limit. Up to this point in time, it was the aircraft accident with the most fatalities (see also Llandow aircraft accident ) .
  • June 12 - A from Karachi next Douglas DC-4-1009 of Air France ( F-BBDE ) flew on approach to the airport Bahrain 5.5 km from the destination airport into the water. Of the 52 inmates, 46 were killed. Pilot fatigue was found to be a contributing factor in the accident.
  • June 14th - Another Douglas DC-4-1009 of Air France (F-BBDM) coming from Karachi flew into the water two days later while approaching Bahrain airport, only 1,600 meters from the scene of the accident two days before. Of the 53 inmates, 40 were killed. The lack of equipment at Bahrain Airport with suitable night flight lights and radio navigation aids was stated as contributing accident factors.
  • July 29 - A Bristol 170 Mk.21 of the French Compagnie Air Transport (F-BENF) crashed on the flight from Algiers Airport to Gao (Mali) near Tanezrouft (Mali). An explosion in the fuel tank of the right wing or its breakage due to material fatigue of the rivets used there are assumed to be possible causes. All 4 crew members and 22 passengers were killed.
  • September 14th - A Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-30-DL of Iranian Airways (EP-AAG) had an accident shortly after taking off from Tehran-Mehrabad airport on a flight to Saudi Arabia, on which seven crew members had to change crew should be promoted. All nine people on board were killed.
  • October 17 - A British European Airways (G-AGIW) Douglas DC-3 / C-47A failed shortly after taking off from Northolt Airport in the direction of Glasgow. When attempting to return, the machine lost more and more height, also because the landing gear was extended, collided with trees and hit the ground. Of the 29 occupants, only one crew member survived.
  • Oct. 31 - A Vickers Viking 1B of the British European Airways (G-AHPN) was in heavy fog on the airport London Heathrow under the conscious decision height flown. When the go-around attempt was unsuccessful, the machine hit the ground and exploded. Of the 30 inmates, 28 were killed.
  • November 7th - A Martin 2-0-2 of the US American Northwest Orient Airlines (now Northwest Airlines ) (N93040) was on the 80 kilometer flight from Helena (Montana) to Butte (Montana) five kilometers east of the destination airport flown into a ridge. All 21 inmates were killed. The prescribed approach procedure had not been followed despite dubious weather conditions with clouds and showers.

1951

  • January 4 - The captain of an overloaded Curtiss C-46D-15-CU Commando operated by the US Monarch Air Service (N79982) attempted to take off from Chicago Midway Airport , Illinois , with the engines under power. There was a stall and loss of control. During the crash landing just outside the airport, fire broke out. All 48 occupants survived (3 crew members and 45 passengers).
  • January 16 - A Martin 2-0-2 of the US American Northwest Orient Airlines (now Northwest Airlines ) (N93054) had an accident near Reardan, Washington ( USA ) on the flight from Spokane to Wenatchee . After an emergency call, the machine fell steeply to the ground. All seven passengers and three crew members on board died.
  • January 28th - A shorts S.45 Solent 3 of the Australian Trans Oceanic Airways (VH-TOA) had an accident while taking off from Marsaxlokk , Malta . The aircraft was on the delivery flight to Australia and was destroyed.
  • January 31 - A Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-10-DK from Flugfélag Islands (now Icelandair) (TF-ISG) had an accident while attempting to land in Reykjavík . The crew had previously canceled an approach due to poor visibility. Some debris was discovered the next day around 18 kilometers from the airport in the Atlantic. All 20 inmates were killed.
  • February 23 - The pilots of a Curtiss C-46E-1-CS Commando of the US American Slick Airways (N59490) had to make an emergency landing next to a country road due to icing near Newhall, California , where the machine hit a post and damaged beyond repair has been. All three crew members survived.
  • March 2 - A Douglas DC-3 operated by Mid-Continent Airlines (N19928) crashed while approaching Sioux City , Iowa , USA , in poor weather conditions. A stall had occurred during a turn at low altitude . Of the 4 crew members and 21 passengers, 3 crew members and 13 passengers died. The machine was destroyed by a fire that broke out immediately.
  • April 9 - A Douglas DC-3 of the Thai Siamese Airways (HS-SAE) on the flight from Bangkok to Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong crashed into the water during a night approach in very bad weather. In a tight curve at Cape D'Aguilar at an altitude of 120 m, the flow stalled, still 10 kilometers from the destination airport. All 16 occupants (5 crew members and 11 passengers) were killed.
  • April 28th - Due to bad weather at the destination Balmaceda and at the alternative airport Chile Chico, a Curtiss C-46A-5-CU Commando of the Chilean Lyon Air (CC-CYA-141) occurred shortly after the Chilean-Argentine border, only 1500 m away at Los Antiguos, Argentina for an emergency landing in the field. The machine was destroyed, all four crew members and seven passengers survived.
  • May 12th - An Amiot AAC.1 (Ju 52) of the French Air Fret Transimax (F-BDYE) had an accident near Rovigo (now Bougara) ( Algeria ) and was irreparably damaged. All three crew members of the cargo flight perished.
  • June 6th - A Douglas DC-3D from Linha Aérea Transcontinental Brasileira (PP-NAL) was flown into a hill at a height of almost 60 meters on the approach to Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont airport . Despite instrument flight conditions, the pilots had carried out a visual approach and had not complied with all regulations for minimum flight altitudes. Of the 3 crew members and 16 passengers, one crew member and one passenger died. The machine was destroyed.
  • (A) July 24 - A Douglas DC-3-455 operated by Sabena (OO-CBA) inBelgiumsufferedan engine failure and an engine fireduring take-off from Gao Airport , Mali . During a return curve at the lowest altitude, the tip of the wing touched the ground, whereupon the impact and fire occurred. The piloting of the aircraft was made even more difficult by hydraulic fluid spraying into the cockpit. All three crew members of the cargo flight died, the aircraft was destroyed (see also the Sabena flight accident near Gao ) .
  • September 2 - A Convair CV-240-2 of the US Pan Am (N90662) flew so low on approach to Kingston Airport (Jamaica) that the end of the wing touched the water. The machine crashed into the harbor. All four crew members and thirty passengers survived. The aircraft was totaled.
  • November 5 - A Douglas DC-3 / C-47-DL belonging to the French Compagnie Aérienne de Transports Indochinois (CATI) (F-BCYL) crashed into a river while taking off from Hanoi-Gia Lam Airport ( Vietnam ). All inmates survived; however, the aircraft was irreparably damaged in the accident.
  • November 7th - A Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-80-DL of the French Société de Transports Aériens Camerounais (STAC) (F-BEIV) had an accident while taking off from Fort Lamy airport (since 1973: N'Djamena), Chad . All inmates survived; however, the aircraft was irreparably damaged in the accident.
  • November 21 - While approaching Kolkata airport , a Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-25-DK of the Indian Deccan Airways (VT-AUO) was flown into the ground and crashed after it had grazed trees. The pilots of the machine coming from Nagpur had attempted an approach in extremely poor visibility. Of the 17 occupants, 16 were killed, only one passenger survived.
  • November 24 - A Douglas DC-4 of the Israeli El Al (4X-ADN) crashed on a cargo flight from Rome with textiles on board shortly before landing three kilometers northeast of Zurich Airport . Six of the seven crew members were killed.
  • December 22nd - A SNCASE Languedoc (SU-AHH) belonging to the Egyptian company Misrair crashed 10 kilometers west of Tehran-Mehrabad airport after having circled the airport twice in a snow storm. All 22 people on board were killed.

1952

  • January 2 - An Air France Amiot AAC.1 (copy of Junkers Ju 52 / 3m) ( aircraft registration F-BAMQ ) had an accident near Andapa ( Madagascar ). Of the eleven occupants (eight passengers and three crew members), 3 passengers and all three crew members were killed.
  • February 8 - A Douglas DC-3 of the Indian National Airways (VT-COK) crashed after taking off from Bagdogra airport from during the climb after a stall had come. All three crew members on the cargo flight survived.
  • February 11 - A US National Airlines Douglas DC-6 (N90891) crashed into a residential building in Elizabeth , New Jersey after taking off from Newark Airport . 29 of the 69 inmates died, as did 4 residents. The causes were an automatic adjustment of the propeller number 3 to reverse thrust, followed by the incorrect shutdown of the functioning engine number 4. This meant that the altitude could not be maintained; the machine crashed into the city.
  • March 3 - When starting a SNCASE Languedoc of Air France (F-BCUm) from Nice airport blocked the result of a design flaw ailerons . The machine turned on its back and crashed about 1 kilometer north of the airport. All 38 occupants were killed in this worst Languedoc accident.
  • July 30th - In a SNCASE Languedoc of the Egyptian Misrair (SU-AHX) an engine was unnecessarily shut down on the flight to Khartoum and the fire extinguisher there was activated. The captain decided to return to the starting point, Cairo-Almaza Airport ( Egypt ). There was also a belly landing which damaged the aircraft beyond repair. All 38 occupants, 5 crew members and 33 passengers survived the crash landing.
  • August 24th - On an Avro York C.1 of the British Eagle Aviation (G-AGNZ) , engine no. 1 had to be switched off after take-off from Berlin-Gatow airport ( Germany ). During the return to the take-off airfield, however, a fire quickly spread in the engine, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing in a field near Potsdam. One of the three crew members of the cargo flight was killed.
  • November 11th - A Douglas DC-4 / C-54B of the French Union Aéromaritime de Transport (UAT) (F-BFVO) had an accident near Lake Chad , about 120 kilometers north-north-west of the launch site Fort-Lamy (today N'Djamena (Chad )) at the beginning of the flight to Beirut . Four of the five crew members and the only passenger were killed.
  • November 27 - An Avro York Mk.I of the British Surrey Flying Service (G-AMGM) sank so far below the prescribed glide path during a radar approach to RAF Station Lyneham ( Wiltshire ) that it fell at high speed into trees and a hill . Contributing factors were strong falling gusts , poor visibility and errors by the pilots and the radar pilot. The aircraft was on a transfer flight from London Stansted Airport . All three crew members survived.
  • Dec. 6 - A Douglas DC-4 of the Cubana (CU-T397) fell more than 4 kilometers after the start from the Airport Kindley Field , Bermuda , into the sea. The plane had made a stopover in Bermuda for refueling on the way from Madrid to Havana . 37 of the 41 people on board died. Only three passengers and one crew member survived the accident.

1953

  • January 7th - (local time) A Douglas DC-4 / C-54B of the US American Flying Tiger Line (N86574) was flown into a mountain on its way from San Francisco to Boeing Field (Seattle) (CFIT, Controlled flight into terrain ). After the approach clearance had already been granted, the aircraft deviated from course, brushed trees near the summit of Squak Mountain about 19 kilometers from the destination airport and crashed into the adjacent valley near a farm on Issaquah-Hobart Road. All seven occupants (four crew members and three passengers) were killed.
  • January 19 - A Bristol 170 Mk.21 operated by British Silver City Airways (G-AICM) ran out of fuel. Since a landing at the destination airport Berlin-Tempelhof was not possible due to fog, a crash landing occurred nearby. Both pilots survived the total write-off, which came about due to insufficient fuel reserves.
  • February 2 - An Avro York of British Skyways (G-AHFA) disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean, about 500 kilometers east of Newfoundland ( Canada ). The machine was on the flight from Lajes (Azores) to Gander . There were 33 passengers and 6 crew members on board.
  • February 7 - A Douglas DC-4 / C-54A of the French Union Aéromaritime de Transport (UAT) (F-BFGR) had an accident while approaching Bordeaux Airport 5.5 kilometers northeast of the field. The machine was on the flight from Abidjan via Casablanca to Paris. When visibility was very poor, the plane sank too early and collided with a grove. Overtiredness of the crew due to excessive previous flight duty is named as a decisive factor in the accident report. Nine of the 21 people on board were killed.
  • March 3 - The pilots of a de Havilland Comet 1A (CF-CUN) of the Canadian Pacific Airlines took the aircraft nose up too steeply during take-off in Karachi ; the machine shot over the end of the track and fell into a dry river bed. The machine was on its delivery flight to Canada. All 11 inmates were killed. It was the first fatal accident involving a passenger jet.
  • April 16 - Soon after take-off, a Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-75-DL of the Aigle Azur (F-BESS) broke on its way from Hanoi / Gia Lam Airport to Son-La / Na San Airport fiercely contested French military base in the Indochina War , a wing. All 30 occupants, 3 crew members and 27 passengers were killed in the crash. The machine was on a military charter flight.
  • June 16 - A fire broke out on a Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-65-DL of the Aigle Azur (F-BEST) during flight. The plane crashed on Phou-Lassi Hill in Laos . The wreck was not found until two weeks later, on June 29th. The machine was on a flight from Vientiane to Saigon . All 34 occupants, 5 crew members and 29 passengers were killed.
  • June 25 - A De Havilland Comet 1A of the French UAT (F-BGSC) coming from Paris rolled over the end of the runway when landing at Dakar-Yoff Airport . She crossed a drainage ditch, which led to the loss of her landing gear, and remained lying on the fuselage around 40 meters behind the end of the runway. All ten passengers and seven crew members survived. The machine was only eight weeks old and was irreparably damaged.
  • July 25 - At Calcutta Airport a De Havilland Comet 1 of the BOAC (G-ALYR) ran into unpaved ground while taxiing , with the right undercarriage being pushed up through the wing, resulting in a total write-off . The trigger was a bad design of the Comet's headlights. All 42 people on board were uninjured.
  • December 12 - A Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-DK of Indian Airlines (VT-CHF) plunged 1,200 meters from the airport Nagpur away from and exploded. After a temporary loss of power shortly after take-off, the pilots flew a very steep return curve at a much too low altitude with the landing gear extended. Of the 14 occupants, 13 were killed, 3 crew members and all 10 passengers.

1954

  • January 6th - A Sud-Est SE.161 Languedoc ( aircraft registration OD-ABU ) of Air Liban got off the runway at Beirut airport when taking off for Kuwait as a result of an engine failure, whereby the undercarriage collapsed and the machine burned out. All five crew members and four passengers survived.
  • January 10th - About twenty minutes after taking off from Rome-Ciampino Airport in the direction of London, the de Havilland Comet 1 G-ALYP of the British BOAC broke up near the island of Elba (Italy) while climbing over the sea - all 35 occupants were killed . During the ongoing investigations, the Comet was initially banned from flying. The cause of the accident could not initially be determined. Just two months after the launch ban had been lifted, another Comet crashed on April 8 (see there) under similar circumstances.
  • February 4th - On a Bristol Britannia 101 operated by the British Ministry of Supply (G-ALRX) , engine 3 (right inside) had to be switched off seven minutes after take-off from Bristol-Filton Airport ( Great Britain ) and later caught fire. As a precautionary measure, the neighboring engine 4 was also switched off. During the approach to Filton, the two remaining engines 1 and 2 (left) failed. They could be launched again quickly, but an emergency landing in the marshland of the River Severn became inevitable. All 13 occupants, 7 crew members and 6 passengers survived the total loss of the machine.
  • April 8th - A good half an hour after taking off from Rome Ciampino airport , a de Havilland Comet 1 of BOAC (G-ALYY) chartered by South African Airways broke near Stromboli and crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea near Stromboli , Italy - all 21 people on board perished. It was the third de Havilland Comet accident in a year under similar circumstances. The type certificate was then withdrawn. Extensive investigations revealed material fatigue due to the use of the pressurized cabin as the cause of the accident, a new finding at the time, and the aircraft type was redesigned.
  • April 13 - An Avro York C.1 of Scottish Airlines (G-AMUM) had an accident at Malta-Luqa airport . The starter of one of the engines was defective. That is why the captain came up with the glorious idea of ​​starting this engine by accelerating the propeller when rolling with the airstream. This actually succeeded, but only so shortly before the end of the runway that it quickly rolled over and the aircraft was irreparably damaged. All 3 crew members survived the mishap.
  • April 24th - The crew of a SNCASE Languedoc of the Egyptian Misrair (SU-AHZ) had a warning about an incorrectly extended landing gear when approaching the then international airport of Damascus ( Syria ) . However, the air traffic controller on the tower informed her that the landing gear was extended. After touching down, the right main landing gear collapsed because it was not locked. All 22 occupants, 5 crew members and 17 passengers survived the crash landing. The aircraft was totaled.
  • August 16 - The pilots of a Bristol 170 Mk.21E operated by Air Vietnam (F-VNAI) avoided an emergency landing at Pakse Airport ( Laos ) on their flight from Hanoi to Saigon due to engine problems . On approach, the machine crashed into a tributary of the Mekong . On the flight, family members were evacuated by troops from the Red River area in northern Vietnam; the plane was overloaded. Of the 55 inmates, 47 were killed, 46 passengers and one steward. This was the worst accident involving a Bristol 170.
  • (A) August 23 - A Douglas DC-6B of the Dutch KLM (PH-DFO) , which took off from Shannon ,flew out to the North Sea again after an uncontrolled random flight over North Holland, where the aircraft hit. The cause could not be clarified. All 21 occupants were killed (see KLM flight 608 ).
  • (A) September 5 - A Lockheed L-1049C Super Constellation of the Dutch KLM (PH-LKY) had an accident on the flight from Shannon to New York-Idlewild Airport . The machine hit the mud of the River Shannon at takeoff 31 seconds after flying over the end of the runway. In the accident, 28 of the 56 occupants were killed, 3 crew members and 25 passengers. The rescue work was only initiated after the navigator had fought his way through the river delta to the airport. Reasons were premature retraction of the landing flaps and premature reduction in engine power as well as a warning light that had been defective for a long time for the retraction status of the landing gear (see also KLM flight 633 ) .
  • September 22nd - An Avro York C.1 of Scottish Airlines (G-ANRC) drifted to the left during crosswind take-off at Stansted Airport ( UK ); it was over-corrected and the machine swung to the right, collapsing the landing gear. A fire broke out and destroyed the aircraft. All 49 occupants, 5 crew members and 44 passengers survived.
  • December 18 - A Douglas DC-6B the Italian airline Linee Aeree Italiane (I-LINE) collided in the fourth approach attempt onto the New York-Idlewild , New York City in the fog with the approach lights , plunged into the cold waters of Jamaica Bay and exploded. Of the 32 people on board, 26 died and 6 were rescued. The cause of the unstable approach leading to the collision was fatigue of the crew, who were deployed for around 30 hours on the route from Rome via Milan, Paris, Shannon, Gander and Boston to New York.

1955

  • February 13 - A Douglas DC-6 of the Belgian Sabena (OO-SDB) on its way from Brussels to Leopoldville (Congo) via Rome-Ciampino was flown 96 kilometers northeast of this airport at an altitude of 1700 meters into the Monte Terminillo mountain . The crew had partially lost their orientation and had strayed far off course. All 29 inmates were killed.
  • (A) February 19 - After taking off from Albuquerque Airport (New Mexico, USA) to Santa Fé , a twin-engine Martin 404 of the TWA (N40416) crashedinto dense clouds against the Sandia mountain rangeat an altitude of around 3000 meters and 21 kilometers northeast of the departure airport. The three-person crew and the 13 passengers died immediately. The unspoken suspicion of an extended suicide by the flight captain Ivan Spong could only be dispelled after years of research by the pilots' association ALPA . The cause of the accident was a stuck course top (see also Trans-World-Airlines-Flight 260 ) .
  • May 26 - An Avro York C.1 of Canadian Associated Airways (CF-HMY) collided with an obstacle after taking off from Edmonton Municipal Airport ( Alberta ), crashed and caught fire. The two crew members were killed. A safe start would not have been possible under the prevailing weather conditions. However, the airline had neither provided the pilots with the documents required for the calculation nor checked the pilots for their suitability. The Canadian supervisory authority had also given the aircraft and the captain the necessary permits without any checks.
  • June 3 - A Douglas DC-4 / C-54A of the Union Aéromaritime de Transport (UAT) (F-BFVT) overturned while landing at Fort-Lamy Airport (now N'Djamena). She is said to have been struck by lightning while touching down during a thunderstorm. The three-person crew of the cargo flight coming from Douala was killed.
  • August 3 - A Grumman Mallard of Pacific Western Airlines (CF IOA) disappeared between Kemano and Kitimat ( British Columbia ). The search was stopped after a month. Three years later, on July 23, 1958, the wreck was found at an altitude of around 1,500 meters near Kemano. All 5 occupants, two pilots and three passengers, were killed.
  • September 14 - On an Avro York C.1 from Iranian Persian Air Services (EP-ADA) , shortly after take-off from Abadan Airport ( Iran ), engine 3 (right inside) initially lost power when the aircraft reached a height of around Had reached 150 meters. Shortly afterwards, engine 4 (far right) began to stutter severely. An emergency landing was carried out on Iraqi territory, about 20 kilometers south of the take-off airport. All 13 occupants, 4 crew members and 9 passengers survived the emergency landing.
  • September 17 - A Pacific Western Airlines (PWA) (CF-GBT) Bristol 170 Mk. 31 engine failed on a flight to Yellowknife , whereupon the pilots decided to return to Edmonton-Municipal Airport . According to another source, the machine was operated by Associated Airways , which was acquired by PWA that same year. Due to, among other things, at least 635 kilograms of overloading, the plane crashed 22 kilometers north of Thorhild ( Alberta ) on a field, although the cargo had started to be dropped. Of the 6 inmates, 2 were killed, the captain and one passenger.
  • September 29 - An Avro York C.1 Canadian Associated Airways (CF HMV) was on a lake in the ( Northwest Territories ) ditched , about 180 kilometers north of Beaver Lodge ( Saskatchewan ) because the fuel supply was ended. However, the aircraft only partially sank in the water, so that the two pilots were initially able to save themselves on a wing. However, they did not have access to emergency equipment or food. The captain died after two days, the first officer survived.
  • December 1 - The left engine of a Douglas DC-3 / C-47B operated by Cruzeiro do Sul (PP-CCC) in Brazil lost power shortly after taking off from Belém-Val-de-Cans Airport ( Para , Brazil). The pilots switched off the hydraulic pump, which resulted in the landing gear hanging in the half-extended position. Its high air resistance, coupled with that of the idling propeller, caused it to descend until a tree was brushed against. The machine crashed and caught fire. All 6 occupants, 4 crew members and 2 passengers were killed.

1956

  • February 18 - An Avro York operated by Scottish Airlines (G-ANSY) crashed shortly after take-off from Malta-Luqa airport after an engine failure. All 50 people on board were killed.
  • February 20 - A Vickers Viscount 744 from US American Capital Airlines (N7404) had to be written off as a total loss after a landing accident at Chicago Midway Airport . There were no fatalities among the 42 inmates.
  • April 1 - A US TWA Martin 4-0-4 (N40403) crashed 500 meters southwest of Greater Pittsburgh Airport shortly after take- off. After a (only optical) fire warning at a height of 30 meters, the left engine was switched off, whereby the propeller was not brought into the sail position in the very short time available due to uncoordinated action by the two pilots . Due to the high air resistance, the ground came into contact. Of the 36 inmates, 22 were killed.
  • April 30th - An Avro York C.1 of Scottish Airlines (G-AMUL) taking off for Malta got off the runway during an aborted take-off at Stansted Airport ( UK ) and crossed a ditch, causing the landing gear to collapse. Of the 54 occupants, 2 passengers were killed; all 5 crew members and 47 passengers survived. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
  • May 30 - The left main landing gear of a Bristol 170 Mk. 31 of Pacific Western Airlines (CF-TFZ) broke through the ice on landing on frozen Beaverlodge Lake ( Northwest Territories ). The aircraft fell on the left wing and was irreparably damaged. All three crew members survived. Even after more than 50 years, the wreck is still in good condition there (see photo from 2010 on Airliners.net).
  • June 24 - A British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) (G-ALHE) Canadair C-4 Argonaut crashed near Kano Airport (Nigeria) shortly after take-off when it brushed trees behind the runway after entering a thunderstorm cell. Of the 45 people on board, 32 were killed.
  • July 15 - A brand new Convair CV-440 from the Swiss airline Swissair (HB-IMD) was on its transfer flight to Switzerland. Coming from Gander , it crashed on the approach to Shannon Airport ( Ireland ) when the final approach curve was flown very deep and too steep and it came to a stall . The four crew members, three Americans and one Swiss, died. Fatigue was identified as a contributing accident factor.
  • September 9 - The crew of a Curtiss C-46 A of Jordan International Airlines (JY-ABV) could not gain height after taking off from Amman-Marka . The pilots then initiated a traffic pattern . On its final approach , the aircraft hit a hill with the landing gear still retracted, slipped over the top and came to rest on the other side of the slope. The plane then caught fire. There were four crew members and 53 passengers on board, one of whom was killed.
  • September 17 - A fuel tank exploded in an Avro York C.1 operated by Iranian Air Services (EP-ADB) while maintenance work was being carried out at London Stansted Airport . The machine was destroyed. No people were killed.
  • September 26th - An Avro York C.1 of the Canadian Maritime Central Airways (CF-HMW) had an accident 28 kilometers northwest of the destination airport Fort Chimo ( Quebec ). The machine was on its return flight from Frobisher Bay Airport . Of the 3 crew members on the cargo flight, 2 were killed. The wreck of the machine can still be seen on Google Earth today (coordinates 58 ° 18 '07 N, 68 ° 42' 44 W).
  • November 7th - A De Havilland Heron 2B of the Braathens SAFE (LN-SUR) crash-landed on Mount Hummelfjell in Tolga, Norway during heavy snowfall . The pilot and one passenger were killed, while the remaining pilot and passengers survived. The accident in Hummelfjell was Braathens SAFE's first fatal accident. The cause of the accident was unusually heavy icing and a strong air flow downwards.
  • November 15 - On a Martin 404 operated by US American Trans World Airlines (TWA) (N40404) , engine number 2 (right) failed after taking off from Las Vegas-McCarran Airport ( Nevada , USA). The machine was approached at far excessive speed and jumped into the air several times after touching down on the runway. When attempting to go- with only one engine running the left wing hit the ground. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair, but all 38 occupants survived.
  • November 24th - An Ilyushin Il-12 of the Czechoslovak airline CSA (OK-DBP) with its destination Prague crashed (probably due to engine problems) after take-off 13 kilometers from Zurich-Kloten Airport, only approx. 150 m from the customs house on the southern outskirts of Wasterkingen in an agricultural area. All 18 passengers and 5 crew members died.
  • November 24th - When a Douglas DC-6B of the Linee Aeree Italiane (I-LEAD) failed to take off , 34 inmates were killed, including the Italian conductor Guido Cantelli . About 15 seconds after taking off from Paris-Orly airport , the plane sank again and flew 600 meters behind the end of the runway into a house. One passenger survived the crash. The flight was to run from Rome via Paris and Shannon to New York. The cause of the loss of height after taking off could not be clarified.
  • Dec. 9 (local time) - One in Vancouver ( British Columbia , Canada launched) Canadair North Star of the Trans-Canada Air Lines (CF TFD) returned on the flight to Calgary back to the starting point after an engine caught fire. During the descent, the machine crashed at an altitude of 2300 meters on Mount Slesse, as the altitude could no longer be maintained presumably due to icing or turbulence. All 62 people on board died. The wreck of the machine was only found in May 1957.
  • December 12th - A Vickers Viscount 708 of Air France (F-BGNK) launched in Paris-Orly crashed on a training flight to Reims from an altitude of 900 to 1500 meters near Dannemois . Loss of control for an unknown reason is suspected as the cause of the accident. All 5 crew members were killed.
  • December 22 - A suite in Rome Ciampino launched Douglas DC-3 of Linee Aeree Italiane (I-LINC) more on the flight to Milan Malpensa from the prescribed flight route. The machine crashed after 2 hours and 12 minutes of flight time in poor visibility at an altitude of 2,600 meters on Monte Giner in Val di Sole ( Trentino , Italy ). Various pilot errors, unforeseen drift due to the weather or instrument errors were named as possible causes. All 21 people on board died.

1957

  • January 29th - A Sud-Est SE.2010 Armagnac (F-BAVG) of the French airline SAGETA had an accident during an unsuccessful go-around attempt in the fog at Paris-Orly airport . The machine was used for an Air France charter flight from Tunis and was already making its second attempt at approach. Since full throttle was given too late, the plane hit the right wing, which then came loose. The hull broke into four parts. One passenger and one crew member were killed, the other 68 (according to another source 64) occupants of the aircraft survived, 30 of them injured.
  • April 7 - A straight in Bagé (Brazil) to Porto Alegre launched Curtiss C-46 Brazilian VARIG (PP-VCF) crashed due to a fire in the wheel well. Its intensity led to the breaking off of the left wing, whereupon the aircraft crashed onto the airport premises. The five-man crew and the 35 passengers were killed.
  • June 24 - An Avro York C.1 operated by Pacific Western Airlines (CF-HFP) rolled over the end of the runway while landing in Cape Parry ( Northwest Territories ) and was irreparably damaged. The two pilots, the only occupants on the cargo flight, survived.
  • (A) July 16 - A Lockheed L-1049C Super Constellation of the Dutch KLM (PH-LKT) crashedinto the sea800 m off the coast of the island of Biak (Indonesia)at night. The captain had previously announced that he wanted to give the passengers a last look at the island and steered the plane back to the airport after take-off. On the approach, the machine steadily lost altitude and hit the water. The nine-person crew and 58 of the 68 passengers were killed in the accident (see KLM flight 844 ) .
  • August 15 - An Ilyushin Il-14 P of the Soviet Aeroflot (CCCP-L1874) on the scheduled flight from Moscow via Riga to Copenhagen (Denmark) approached the chimney of a power plant and crashed into the southern harbor. All 23 people on board died.
  • August 24th - The Lockheed 18 Learstar 1 with the aircraft registration D-COCA of the German Helmut Horten GmbH had an accident on the way from Düsseldorf to Klagenfurt. During the descent to Klagenfurt Airport , the left wing of the 14-year-old aircraft broke near Krumpendorf . All three crew members died in the crash, the only occupants.
  • October 3 - A fire broke out on board a Curtiss C-46 A operated by Lebanese International Airways (OD-ACK) after taking off from Beirut Airport . When attempting to return, control of the controls was lost and the machine crashed into the sea about 18 km offshore. All 4 crew members and 23 passengers were killed.
  • October 26 - The pilots one from Madrid-Barajas upcoming De Havilland Heron 2D of the Spanish Aviaco (EC-AOA) landed at the San Sebastian Airport . Due to a leak in the brake system, it was not possible to stop the machine before the runway end. It rolled over into the morass in the estuary of the Bidasoa River. All 22 occupants, 17 passengers and the 5 crew members survived this accident. The plane was destroyed.
  • November 6 - A Bristol Britannia 301 of the British Ministry of Supply (G-ANCA) crashed on a test flight near Downend ( Great Britain ) in a forest, 7 kilometers east-southeast of the departure and destination airport Bristol-Filton . Control was lost during the approach at 1,500 feet (approximately 460 meters). All 15 occupants, 4 crew members and 11 passengers were killed.
  • December 23 - An Avro York C.1 of Scottish Airlines (G-AMUN) coming from Malta collided with a tree 1200 meters from the runway during the third approach to London-Stansted Airport ( UK ), fell and caught fire. All 4 crew members were killed.

1958

  • January 16 - The left engine of the Fairchild C-82 Packet PP-CEF operated by Cruzeiro do Sul, Brazil, caught fire after takeoff. The machine crashed near its take-off airport, Belem -Val-de-Cans. All three crew members were killed.
  • March 7 - A Vickers Viking 1B from the Egyptian Misrair (SU-AGN) crashed into Lake Manzala (Egypt) on approach to Port Said Airport . The machine coming from Athens had evaded Cairo due to weather reasons. Eight of the 26 people on board were killed.
  • April 14th - The pilots of a De Havilland Heron 2D of the Spanish Aviaco (EC-ANJ) were forced to take a violent evasive maneuver on the approach to Barcelona-El Prat airport in order to avoid a collision with another Heron. The machine got out of control and crashed into the sea. All 16 occupants were killed as a result of this air traffic controller error.
  • April 28 - A British European Airways (BEA) (G-AORC) Vickers Viscount 802 was flown off -road on its approach to Prestwick Airport and burned out. Reasons were a misinterpretation of the instruments by the captain, insufficient cooperation within the cockpit crew and an ergonomically poorly designed altimeter with an ambiguous display. All five inmates survived.
  • May 20 - An Avro York C.1 operated by the British Dan-Air (G-AMUT) touched down late on landing at Malta Airport and rolled over the end of the runway. The landing gear was retracted to bring the aircraft to a standstill. The machine collided with a wall and was irreparably damaged. All three crew members on the cargo flight survived.
  • May 20 - A Vickers Viscount 745d of the US Capital Airlines (N7410) collided in flight with a Lockheed T-33 of the Air National Guard (53-5966) . In the accident near Brunswick during their approach to Martin State Airport (Baltimore), all eleven occupants of the airliner and a military pilot were killed; the second was able to save himself with the ejection seat.
  • May 25 - The crew of an Avro York of the British Dan-Air (G-AMUV) made an emergency landing near Gurgaon (India) on the flight from Karachi to Delhi because of a burning engine . The cargo plane broke on the uneven terrain, and four of the five crew members were killed.
  • August 9 - A Vickers Viscount 748D of the Rhodesian Central African Airways (VP-YNE ) coming from Wadi Halfa (Sudan) flew 9 kilometers southeast of Benghazi Airport (Libya) in hilly terrain. It is possible that the pilots who had started the flight 18 hours earlier in Salisbury (Rhodesia) and had already made other stopovers in Ndola, Entebbe and Khartoum played a role. In the accident, 36 of the 54 occupants were killed.
  • September 2 - The pilots of the Vickers Viking 1 G-AIJE of British Independent Air Travel turned back on a cargo flight to Nice about 15 minutes after taking off from London Heathrow due to engine problems. It was not possible to maintain altitude and the machine continued to sink until it hit. The three-person crew who were alone on board perished, as well as four people on the ground. The airline u. a. Inadequate maintenance by unqualified personnel, overloading and failure to allow the pilots to rest.
  • October 17 - The pilots of a Vickers Viking 1B from Deutsche Flugdienst (D-BELA) shut down the right engine on a cargo flight from London Heathrow to Düsseldorf Airport via Belgium due to low oil pressure and initiated an alternative landing in Brussels . Since the altitude could not be maintained, the master ordered the engine to be restarted, which the co-pilot carried out without using the checklist. This led to an inextinguishable engine fire, whereupon an emergency landing was carried out in a field near Kamershoek near Zele (Belgium). After the three crew members got off the plane, it exploded.
  • November 4 - A Bristol 170 Mk.21 of the French Compagnie Air Transport (F-BHVB) hit an obstacle on its approach to Le Touquet Airport . The resulting damage resulted in the landing gear collapsing when it touched down and the aircraft was a total loss. There was no personal injury.
  • December 24 - A Bristol Britannia 312 of the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) (G-AOVD) was near Bournemouth flying in foggy weather in the ground. The machine was on a test flight as part of its annual inspection. The ergonomically very unfavorable design of the altimeter as a three-pointer instrument was named as a contributing factor. Nine of the twelve occupants were killed, including all seven passengers.
  • December 26th - A Douglas DC-6 B of the French Union Aéromaritime de Transport (UAT) (F-BGTZ) got caught in a gust roller at a height of 15 meters during an approaching thunderstorm while taking off from Salisbury Airport (now Harare) and thus always lost further in speed. Despite full throttle, she sank to the ground again and caught fire. Coming from Johannesburg , after this stopover at the scene of the accident, the plane was supposed to fly on to Brazzaville and then via Nice to Paris. Three of the seventy inmates were killed.

1959

  • February 3 - The pilot of a turboprop transport aircraft of the type Lockheed L-188A Electra the US American Airlines (N6101A) led a Yorker steep descent into the New Airport La Guardia by and flew the machine about 1500 meters before the runway in the East River . Many of the inmates initially survived the accident, but then drowned in the freezing water. Only 8 people survived, 65 people died.
  • May 12 - A Vickers Viscount 745D of the US American Capital Airlines (N7463) went into an uncontrolled dive while flying through a thunderstorm with very severe turbulence and broke in the air near the town of Chase ( Maryland ). All 31 occupants, 4 crew members and 27 passengers lost their lives.
  • September 5 - The pilot of a Vickers Viking 1B of the French Airnautic (F-BFDN) on the cargo flight from Athens Hellinikon to Airport Bastia resulted in Traliceto, near Tizzano on the southwestern tip of Corsica, 200 meters from the beach a ditching through. The machine was damaged beyond repair. Both pilots (the only occupants) swam ashore and survived. The cargo on the way to Edinburgh consisted of the equipment of a US ballet group.
  • December 12th - A Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer 3 of Scottish Airlines (G-AOEN) suffered a total loss near Luabo ( Mozambique ). The left engine was switched off on a demonstration flight. When the aircraft lost altitude even with the right engine at maximum power, attempts were made in vain to get the left engine running again. During the emergency landing on an island in the Zambezi , both wings and the landing gear broke off. All 15 occupants, 1 pilot and 14 passengers survived.
  • December 21 - A Vickers Viscount 785 of Alitalia (I-Lizt) crashed on landing at the airport Rome Ciampino , Italy. The machine, on which two of the four engines were set to idle on a test flight, became uncontrollable during the landing maneuver below the minimum speed for engine failure and crashed. Both people on board (the pilots) were killed.
  • December 22nd - A Vickers Viking 1B from Eagle Aviation (G-AMGG) came off the track when landing at Inezgane airfield near Agadir ( Morocco ) due to a blown tire. All 36 occupants survived the accident. Due to the amount of damage, the machine was written off as a total loss.

1960

  • January 5th - On a Vickers Viscount 701 of British European Airways (BEA) ( aircraft registration G-AMNY ) the hydraulic system and with it the brakes and the nose wheel control failed after touching down at the destination airport in Malta . On the sloping terrain, the machine rolled against the control tower. None of the 51 occupants was harmed, but the aircraft was ready for scrap.
  • (A) January 18 - All four engines of a Vickers Viscount 745D operated by US American Capital Airlines (N7462) failed due to icing on a scheduled flight from Washington to Norfolk because the pilots had not switched on the engine's de-icing system. They managed to restart the outer right engine. They increased its output to the maximum in order to keep the machine at height. The plane then went into a spin and hit a wooded area near Charles City, Virginia, USA, with almost no forward movement. All 50 occupants were killed (see also Capital Airlines Flight 20 ) .
  • January 19 - A Sud Aviation Caravelle I operated by SAS Scandinavian Airlines (OY-KRB) hit a 1070 m high mountain about 10 kilometers from Ankara Airport (Turkey). It is assumed that the pilots fell below the height prescribed for this approach segment. All 42 people on board were killed. It was the first fatal aircraft accident for the Scandinavian airline since it was founded 12 years earlier.
  • January 21 - A Lockheed L-1049E Super Constellation operated by the Colombian airline Avianca (HK-177) was en route from New York (USA) to Bogota (Colombia) when the plane crashed on its stopover in Montego Bay (Jamaica) . When touching down very hard on the runway, the landing gear broke, causing the fuselage to hit the ground and the aircraft to burst into flames. Of the 46 inmates, 37 were killed.
  • January 29 - A Curtiss C-46 Super C of the Canadian Pacific Western Airlines (CF-PWD) developed problems with the right engine during flight. It was turned off and the pilots returned to the starting airport in Port Hardy ( British Columbia back). On landing, the machine rolled over the end of the runway into the swampy terrain with tree stumps. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair. All 51 occupants, 3 crew members and 48 passengers survived the accident.
  • February 5 - A Douglas DC-4 of Lloyd Aéreo Boliviano (CP-609) crashed shortly after taking off from Cochabamba Airport (Bolivia) into a lagoon 15 kilometers south of the take-off airport. According to reports, an engine had caught fire. All 59 occupants, 4 crew members and 55 passengers were killed.
  • April 12th - A Douglas DC-3 / C-53 of the Brazilian Cruzeiro do Sul (PP-CDS) , which was operated for VARIG , had an accident during take-off in Pelotas ( Brazil ). The aircraft deviated to the right of the runway, it was overcorrected and she set course for parked machines. The captain thought that he could prevent a collision by taking off early, but this turned out to be a mistake. The DC-3 collided with the parked aircraft PT-ABZ and PP-HDJ , crashed and caught fire. Of the 22 occupants, 2 of the 3 crew members and 8 of the 19 passengers were killed.
  • April 22nd - A Douglas DC-4 of the Belgian Sobelair (OO-SBL) was flown against a mountain in poor visibility during the approach to Bunia ( Congo ). All 35 inmates were killed.
  • August 15 - In a Saab Scandia of the Brazilian VASP (Viação Aérea São Paulo) (PP-SQS) a fire broke out in the front luggage compartment on the flight from São Paulo-Viracopos Airport to Uberlandia . The master did not operate the fire extinguishing system because he believed that this would further impair the already poor visibility in the cockpit. During the emergency landing on the return to Viracopos, the machine rolled over the end of the runway and got into an area where construction work was being carried out. All occupants survived, but the aircraft was destroyed.
  • August 24 - One of the engines of a Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation operated by the Australian Qantas (VH-EAC) failed during take-off at Mauritius Airport . During the following aborted take-off , it was not possible to bring the aircraft to a stop in time; it rolled over the end of the runway at a speed of 40 knots. The machine jumped over an embankment, crashed into a deep gully, and caught fire. All 50 occupants, 12 crew members and 38 passengers survived the total write-off.
  • October 14th - A De Havilland Heron 2 of the Italian Itavia (I-AOMU) flew into the mountainside of Capanne on Elba (Italy) in bad weather . All eleven people on board were killed.
  • (A) December 10 - An Antonov An-2T of Aeroflot (CCCP-33181) , with a flight from Semipalatinsk to Abai was carried out, was launched without a valid meteorological report and met along the route to very difficult weather conditions. When a U-turn for the return to Semipalatinsk was flown 45 kilometers from the departure airport, several passengers moved to the rear fuselage area to the on-board toilet. This resulted in a shift in the center of gravity, which led to a stall and ultimately to the machine crashing. All 12 occupants were killed (see also Aeroflot flight 11 ) .

1961

  • February 4 - A Vickers Viking 1B of the LTU (D-BALI) skidded at the start of a cargo flight at Düsseldorf Airport and grazed the hut of the ILS transmitter. The three crew members survived, with two pilots being slightly injured. However, the aircraft suffered a total loss.
  • Feb. 18 - A Douglas DC-7CF (N745PA) of the Pan Am collided landing at the airport Stuttgart with a pile of dirt in front of and next to the runway. The pilots of the cargo plane coming from Frankfurt continued the approach in thick fog with a visibility of 100 meters and a cloud height of 30 meters, even below the decision height of 200 feet, although the instrument landing system did not function reliably and 4 of 5 elements of the approach lighting were out of order . When it collided with the mound of earth, the landing gear and engine No. 3 (inside right) were torn off. Nevertheless, it was possible the pilot durchzustarten and at the Nuremberg airport a belly landing on a foam carpet perform. The three-man crew remained uninjured, but the aircraft was irreparably damaged.
  • May 24th - The left tire of an Avro York CI of the Lebanese Trans Mediterranean Airways (TMA) (OD-ACO) burst during take-off from Azaiba airport ( Oman ). The pilots returned for an emergency landing. The aircraft came off the runway, the landing gear collapsed and the machine was irreparably damaged. All occupants survived the accident.
  • May 30 - Five minutes after take-off from Lisbon , Portugal , a Douglas DC-8 of the Dutch KLM (PH-DCL) crashed into the Atlantic . KLM carried out the flight on behalf of the Venezuelan VIASA . All 61 occupants (47 passengers and 14 crew members) were killed.
  • (A) July 11 - A Douglas DC-8-12 of United Air Lines (N8040U) with 129 people on board had a hydraulic problem during the flight. Two tires burstduring the emergency landing at Denver-Stapleton Airport , Colorado ( USA ). The plane turned and caught fire. The fire fighting and rescue of the people showed serious deficiencies in terms of organization, equipment and personnel despite previous complaints. Seventeen people died (one of them from the ground crew), 84 people got away with injuries (see also United Air Lines Flight 859 ) .
  • July 12 - An Ilyushin Il-18 of the Czechoslovak CSA (OK-PAF) crashed for unknown reasons while approaching Casablanca , Morocco . The machine was on the flight to Rabat and had evaded to Casablanca due to the fog there. All 72 people on board were killed.
  • July 27 - A Boeing 707-328 of Air France (F-BHSA) landed on the flight from Paris-Orly via Hamburg to Anchorage and Tokyo first on the Hamburg airport between. During the later take-off, the captain noticed that the aircraft was pulling to one side. He then aborted the start, the machine came off the runway while coasting and rolled into an adjacent depression. The landing gear and several engines tore off and the fuselage broke into three parts. The machine was only two years old and had to be written off. All 41 people on board survived the accident.
  • (A) August 6 - A Douglas TS-62 (C-47 / DC-3) from Malév (HA-TSA) , which was used for a scenic flight over Budapest , crashed into a residential building after a loss of control, with all 27 occupants and three people were killed on the ground. It was found that the pilots had violated operating regulations by granting third parties access to the cockpit and performing prohibited aerobatic maneuvers (see also aviation accident in Budapest 1961 ) .
  • (A) Sept. 10 - A Douglas DC-6B of US President Airlines (N90773) crashed about a minute after takeoff from Shannon ( Ireland ab). The machine was supposed to fly from Dusseldorf via Gander ( Newfoundland ) to Chicago and got into an increasingly steep left turn until it finally fell 1500 meters from the runway into the River Shannon at an angle of about 90 °. All 83 people on board, 6 crew members and 77 passengers (65 of them Germans) were killed. A technical defect is assumed to be the cause of this second worst accident involving a DC-6 (see also the crash of the DC-6 "Theodore Roosevelt" 1961 ) .
  • September 12 - The pilot of a Caravelle III of the Air France (F-BJTB) initiated on the flight from Paris-Orly to Rabat descent four kilometers too early. The machine hit a hill and went up in flames. All 77 inmates died. The contributing factor was the unergonomic design of the Kollsman altimeter installed in the Caravelle.
  • October 14 - Hydraulic fluid was lost in a Douglas DC-7C of Panair do Brasil (PP-PDL) on the way from Manaus . During the emergency landing at Belem Airport , the machine got off the runway when using reverse thrust ; the landing gear collapsed when crossing a ditch. All occupants survived the total loss of the aircraft.
  • November 1 - A Douglas DC-7C of Panair do Brasil (PP-PDO) was flown into a hill 84 meters high on its way from Sal Airport ( Cape Verde ). The aircraft, which first started in Lisbon , was on its final night approach to Recife Airport when it flew 2.7 kilometers from the runway into the area. Of the 88 inmates, 45 were killed.
  • Nov. 8 - A Lockheed L-049 Constellation the Imperial Airlines (N2737A) led by a charter flight for the US Army, exposing as the two right engines. An emergency landing that was initiated was canceled at a low altitude because the landing gear could not be extended due to the lack of hydraulic pressure. During the go- around , another engine failed due to overload and the machine crashed in a forest near Richmond, Virginia , ( USA ). 77 of the 79 inmates were killed. A pilot and the flight engineer survived injured.
  • November 30th - A Vickers Viscount 720 of the Australian Ansett ANA (VH-TVC) broke in the air in strong turbulence and high speed shortly after taking off from Sydney-Kingsford Smith Airport (Australia) 5 kilometers south of it. All 15 people on board died.

1962

  • March 4 - A Douglas DC-7C from Caledonian Airways (G-ARUD) , which was used on a charter flight for Trans-Africa Air Coach, hardly gained any altitude after taking off from Douala (Cameroon) due to a presumably blocked elevator . The machine collided with several trees three kilometers past the end of the runway, hit a swamp and burned out. All 111 occupants (101 passengers and 10 crew members) were killed.
  • March 15 - An L-1049H Super Constellation of Flying Tiger Line (N6911C) sat on the airport Adak despite multiple warnings from the air traffic controllers of the runway, where the chassis and the right wing were demolished. A violent fire broke out; one of the seven crew members on the cargo flight was killed.
  • On May 9, 1962 a Convair CV-240-0 of the Brazilian Cruzeiro do Sul (PP-CEZ) was flown into the ground on the approach to the airport of Vitoria ( Espirito Santo , Brazil). As early as 1,860 meters from the runway, the aircraft struck a eucalyptus tree and fell to the ground. Instead of having the required height of at least 150 meters, the pilots approached far too low. In this CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ) 23 of the 25 occupants were killed, all 3 crew members and 20 of the 22 passengers.
  • (A) June 3 - A Boeing 707-328B of Air France (F-BHSM) , referring to the flight to New York-Idlewild was, was in a failed aborted take-off on the Paris-Orly completely destroyed. When reaching take-off speed, the pilots were unable to pull the elevator far enough for take-off, which is why the captain had to abort the take-off at 179 knots. The plane rolled over the end of the runway at high speed, broke up and caught fire. Of the 130 occupants, only 2. The causes of the accident were a considerably trimmed position of the horizontal stabilizer and the failure of the trim system (see also Air France flight 007 ) .
  • June 8th - A Curtiss C-46 of Transair Sweden (SE-CFB) had to be written off as a total loss after a landing accident in Albertville (Congo). People were not harmed. The front fuselage section with cockpit was dismantled and used to repair the sister aircraft SE-CFC .
  • June 30 - The landing gear of a Bristol 170 Mk.21 operated by Silver City Airways (G-AGVC) collapsed on landing at Ronaldsway Airport . The machine was irreparably damaged, the occupants remained uninjured. (Note: In the Aviation Safety Network source, the operator is incorrectly referred to as "Manx Airlines".)
  • July 22 - The crew of a Bristol Britannia 314 of Canadian Pacific Airlines (CF-CZB) reported an engine failure after taking off from Honolulu Airport (USA). The machine returned to the airport and hit the runway while attempting an emergency landing. The accident claimed 27 lives; 13 inmates survived.
  • (A) August 20 - The captain of a Douglas DC-8-33 of Panair do Brasil (PP-PDT) did not interrupt the take-off of his plane from Rio de Janeiro-Galeão airport until a late point in time. The plane rolled over the end of the runway and crashed into the sea. During the aircraft accident investigations it was found that although the brakes were applied, the thrust reverser no longer worked after all engines were damaged. The emergency lighting did not work and the passengers had not been informed of the location of the emergency exits or the use of life jackets. After drifting about 100 meters, the aircraft sank within 25 minutes. 15 of the 105 people on board were killed (see also Panair-do-Brasil flight 026 ) .
  • November 27th - A Boeing 707-441 (PP-VJB) crashed while approaching Lima Airport when it was flown into the side of Mount La Cruz. All 80 passengers and the 17 crew members were killed. It could not be determined why the machine had deviated from its course.
  • Nov. 30 - A Douglas DC-7B of Eastern Air Lines (N815D) touched the go-around in the fog on the New York-Idlewild with the two propellers left the floor in the airport area. The machine from Charlotte (North Carolina) had drifted to the left while going around and finally fell to the ground. The go-around procedure was not carried out correctly and quickly enough during the necessary rapid transition from visual flight back to instrument flight, so that the machine did not climb. Of the 51 inmates, 25 were killed.
  • Dec. 28 - With a from Southend coming Aviation Traders ATL-98 the Channel Air Bridge (G-ARSF) was in poor visibility and snowfall a visual approach to the airport Rotterdam performed. Due to an approach that was too steep, the aircraft collided with a two-meter-high dam 240 meters from the runway, jumped up again and then hit again very violently 70 meters further. The right wing tore off, whereupon the machine turned to the right on its back and slid another 200 meters. The captain was killed, the other 3 crew members and the 14 passengers survived.

1963

  • January 22 - A Convair CV-340-59 of the Brazilian Cruzeiro do Sul (PP-CDY) got off the runway during landing in heavy rain at the airport of Parnaiba ( Piaui , Brazil) and made a ring peep . All nine occupants, three crew members and six passengers survived. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
  • March 15 - An Avro York operated by Lebanese Trans Mediterranean Airways (OD-ACZ) flew ten minutes after take-off into the mountains, 26 kilometers west of Tehran-Mehrabad Airport (Iran). The test captain, who was the third pilot, probably simulated an engine failure of engine no. 4, followed by the actual failure of engine no. 3. A timely restart of the intact engine no. 4 apparently did not take place. All four crew members of the cargo plane were killed.
  • March 30 - A Douglas DC-3 of Itavia (I-TAVI) flew in bad weather into a mountain slope in Monte Vale Rotonote 85 kilometers southeast of Rome (Italy). All eight people on board were killed.
  • April 13 - A Douglas DC-6B operated by Sterling Airways (OY-EAP) had an accident while landing at Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport . The plane was on a transfer flight from Las Palmas with only three engines running. Just before the runway, altitude and speed had dropped too far. When attempting a go-around with three engines, the airplane tilted sharply to the right and hit the wing tip 50 meters from the runway, whereupon the wing broke. The three-person flight crew survived and the machine was destroyed.
  • May 3 - A Convair CV-340-59 operated by Cruzeiro do Sul (PP-CDW) in Brazil caught a fire in engine 2 (right). The pilots returned to the departure airport São Paulo-Congonhas ( Sao Paulo , Brazil). On the final approach, about one kilometer east of it, the aircraft took the aircraft nose very steeply upwards (45 degrees); it stalled and crashed. The cause was an improper procedure when moving the propeller out of the sail position . Of the 50 occupants, 37 were killed, 4 of the 5 crew members and 33 of the 45 passengers.
  • June 3 - A Douglas DC-3 Hiper of Indian Airlines (VT-AUL) crashed on the flight from Amritsar to Srinagar from near Sarna. All 29 occupants, 3 crew members and 26 passengers were killed. The plane broke apart in midair. A possible cause was identified as either an incorrectly adjusted rudder system due to maintenance or a malfunction of the autopilot .
  • August 12 - A of Lille coming Vickers Viscount 708 of Air Inter (F-BGNV) collided on approach to the airport of Lyon-Bron during a thunderstorm with trees. The plane struck a farmhouse 15 miles north of the destination airport and eventually crashed into a field. Of the 16 occupants, 15 were killed, as well as one person on the ground, only one passenger survived.
  • (A) September 4 - A Caravelle III of the Swiss airline Swissair (HB-ICV) crashed on the scheduled flight from Zurich , Switzerland , to Geneva during the climb. Due to a long rolling maneuver on the ground, the brakes on the landing gear overheated, which caused the rims to burst during take-off and damage to hydraulic lines. The hot metal splinters soon ignited the hydraulic oil and the aircraft was unable to maneuver. It crashed near Dürrenäsch . All 74 occupants and 6 crew members died in the accident (see also Swissair flight 306 ) .
  • September 11th - A Vickers Viking 1B of Airnautic (F-BJER) flew on the way from London-Gatwick to Perpignan airport in the mountain Pic de la Roquette, almost 50 km southwest of the destination airport. All 40 occupants, 4 crew members and 36 passengers were killed as a result of this navigation error. This was the most momentous accident involving a Vickers Viking.
  • September 24 - A British United Air Ferries (G-AMWA) Bristol 170 Mk.32 engine malfunctioned when taking off from Guernsey Airport . The machine was supposed to fly to Bournemouth and carried mostly freight and a car. The take-off was aborted at a speed of about 80 knots. When the pilots realized that the remaining runway length was no longer sufficient and that there would be a collision with obstacles, they steered the aircraft to the left, whereupon the machine took off briefly, then rolled through a fence and across a street and finally 200 to 400 meters came to a stop behind the end of the runway. All three crew members and the only passenger survived, but the aircraft was ready for scrap.

1964

  • April 21 - Under a Vickers Viscount 700D of Middle East Airlines (OD-ACX) , part of the taxiway collapsed while taxiing at the Egyptian airport El Arisch . The damage to the hull, propellers and engines was irreparable. People were not harmed.
  • September 4 - A Vickers Viscount 701C of the Brazilian VASP (PP-SRR) was flown 15 kilometers southwest of Nova Friburgo ( Brazil ) into the mountain Pico da Caledônia. The machine was en route from Vitória to Rio de Janeiro when it collided at an altitude of only 1,950 meters (6400 feet) with the mountain, which is about 90 kilometers from its destination. It was 35 kilometers to the right of the mandatory route. In this CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ) all 39 occupants were killed, 5 crew members and 34 passengers.
  • (A) September 15 - A Douglas DC-3 / C-47A-80-DL operated by Colombian Avianca (HK-319) , which was operating a domestic cargo flight from Condoto to Medellin, crashed while pilots were trying to join to return to the departure airport of the machine, which is difficult to control due to an incorrect load. The pilots were both killed in the incident (see also Avianca accident at Condoto ) .
  • November 15 - A Bonanza Air Lines Fairchild F-27 A (N745L) was flown into a mountain about 15 km north of Las Vegas. In this CFIT ( Controlled Flight into Terrain ), all 29 occupants, 3 crew members and 26 passengers, were killed. Coming from Phoenix , the plane hit a mountain peak less than 5 minutes from the destination airfield during a snow storm.

1965

  • (A) February 8 - The pilots of a Douglas DC-7 B of the US American Eastern Air Lines (N849D ) launched in New York City (USA)interrupted their climb and began a descent without clearance around a Boeing 707 of the Pan American World Airways evade. However, the Boeing 707 itself was descending, so the planes continued to fly towards each other. In order to avoid a collision, the pilots steered the DC-7 into an exaggerated banked curve, in the course of which the machine crashed. All 84 people on board the DC-7 were killed (see also Eastern Air Lines Flight 663 ) .
  • February 8 - A Douglas DC-7C of Scandinavian Airlines had an accident while taking off for a flight to Copenhagen at Tenerife-Los Rodeos Airport . After taking off, the machine sank back onto the runway because the landing gear was retracted too early. The aircraft caught fire and was destroyed, but all 84 passengers and 7 crew members were able to leave the aircraft beforehand.
  • 31 March - At a Convair CV-440 of the Spanish Iberia (EC-ATH) occurred on the flight from Malaga to Tangier Airport 18 kilometers west of the destination airport for unknown reasons to stall and crash into the sea. Of the 53 occupants, only three surviving passengers could be rescued from the sea.
  • April 16 - On a training flight with a Fairchild F-27 F operated by Bonanza Air Lines (N757L) , the flaps retracted asymmetrically at Las Vegas Airport due to a technical defect. When taking off, the aircraft turned to the left, made a ringelpiez and was irreparably damaged. The two pilots, the only occupants, survived the accident injured.
  • June 8th - Two CASA 352s (Junkers Ju 52 / 3m under license) of the Spanish Air Force collided near the Alcantarilla air base near Murcia . The two aircraft (T.2B-229 and T.2B-230) collided within a formation of nine CASA 352s while dropping parachutists and crashed. All six crew members of the two machines as well as eight parachutists on board one of the machines were killed.
  • October 27 - The Vickers Vanguard G-APEE the British European Airways crashed on the flight from Edinburgh at 1:23 at night during the third approach attempted to London Heathrow Airport in the fog during go-around on the runway 28R from. All 36 inmates were killed. The causes were u. a. Fatigue, a lack of experience and training as well as incorrect operation of the unergonomically designed landing flap levers were determined.
  • November 11th - A Boeing 727-22 of the US American United Airlines (N7030U) was approached far too high at Salt Lake City International Airport , whereupon the captain increased the rate of descent far beyond the permitted level. An attempt by the first officer to increase the thrust was stopped by the master. The aircraft hit the runway at a high rate of descent, the main landing gear broke and tore a hole in the fuselage, whereupon a fire broke out. 43 of the 91 people on board were killed.

1966

  • (A) November 15 - A Pan-Am cargo plane ofthe type Boeing 727-21 (N317PA) crashedonto a GSSD military training areawhile approaching Berlin-Tegel Airport in Döberitzer Heide ( GDR ). The cause wasofficially statedby the NTSB as unexplained, since a final clarification without flight recorder, voice recorder and other essential wreckage was not possible. These were not returned by the Soviet authorities. All three crew members were killed (see also Pan-Am flight 708 ) .
  • December 24th - A Douglas DC-3 of the Avianca (HK-161) launched in Bogotá crashed on the flight to Cali near Cascubel ( Colombia ) for unknown reasons. The crashed machine was only found on January 4, 1967. All 29 inmates were killed.

1967

  • January 23 - A Convair CV-640 operated by the US American Caribair (N3408) touched down about 80 meters from the runway when landing in San Juan (Puerto Rico) (airport unknown). The nose landing gear and the right main landing gear collapsed and the right wing broke off. All 28 occupants, 3 crew members and 25 passengers survived. The machine was damaged beyond repair.
  • (A) March 5 - A Douglas DC-8-33 (PP-PEA) of VARIG had an accident on the flight from Rome to Monrovia . The master initially failed to initiate the descent in good time before landing. When he saw the lights at Monrovia airport, he initiated a hasty descent under visual flight rules when visibility was poor. In doing so, he let the machine sink too quickly. The DC-8 hit 1.8 kilometers from the runway ( controlled flight into terrain ). The flight engineer, 50 passengers and five people died on the ground. Of the remaining occupants, 21 passengers and 18 crew members survived the accident. The investigation report criticized the fact that the 18 surviving crew members did not make any particular effort to help evacuate the remaining passengers in the aircraft (see also VARIG flight 837 ) .
  • March 8 - An Aviation Traders ATL-98 of the Compagnie Air Transport (F-BMHU) lost at the start of the Karachi Airport back to altitude and crashed on a road bridge, while rickshaws destroyed and a truck. The take-off weight of the fully loaded machine was too high for the prevailing weather conditions. Four of the six crew members and seven people on the ground were killed.
  • June 3 - A Douglas DC-4 / C-54A of the British Air Ferry (G-APYK) collided with Mont Canigou, around 40 kilometers southwest of the destination airport, at an altitude of almost 1200 meters when approaching Perpignan Airport . The fully occupied machine came on a charter flight from Manston Airport in the UK . All 88 people on board were killed (5 crew members and 83 passengers). It is a DC-4 accident with the most fatalities. Carbon monoxide poisoning and poor language skills of air traffic control in Perpignan were identified as contributing causes for the pilots' loss of orientation.
  • June 12 - A Bristol Freighter Mk.31E of the Irish Aer Turas (EI-APM) coming from Prestwick Airport jumped up several times when landing at Dublin Airport, whereupon the pilots decided to take off. This led to the failure of the left engine and loss of control in a left turn. The left wing collided with an attic; it crashed. Both pilots, the only occupants, were killed.
  • September 14 - A Airspeed Ambassador of Autair (G-ALZS) rolled over after landing at the airport Luton (England), the end of the runway. The aircraft was written off as a total loss. All 69 occupants of the machine were uninjured.
  • (A) November 6 - A Boeing 707-131 operated by US American Trans World Airlines (N742TW) took off from Cincinnati Airport for Los Angeles . When the machine passed a Delta Air Lines Douglas DC-9, which wasstanding next to the runway,the engine thrust of the DC-9 caused Boeing engine no. 4 to burn out. The Boeing crew initiated an aborted take-off, but the machine did not come to a stop in time, rolled over a hill and took off for a moment. When restarting, the engine tore off and the machine skidded 100 meters over the runway. The fuselage broke apart and the right wing tore off. The seven-person crew survived the accident, one of the 29 passengers was killed (see also Trans-World Airlines flight 159 ) .
  • December 25th - A Douglas DC-3 of the Thai Airways Company (HS-TDH) had an accident while approaching Chiang Mai Airport . Despite the fog and with a visibility of 100 meters, the master decided to make a visual approach along the middle of three streets that led to the runway. However, he confused this with the right of the three and only noticed this late. When attempting to intercept the machine, it sheared and hit the ground, killing 4 out of 31 people on board.

1968

  • March 5 - A Boeing 707-328C of Air France (F-BLCJ) flew at Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe altitude of 1200 meters against a volcano. All 63 people on board were killed. The flight recorder could never be recovered and the cause of the crash could not be determined.
  • March 21 - The captain of a Boeing 727-22C on a United Airlines cargo flight (N7425U) did not cancel take-off from Chicago O'Hare Airport until shortly after take-off. The acoustic warning of unsafe start-up configuration was active almost continuously during the start-up run; however, the start was initially continued. The cause turned out to be that the landing flaps and slats had been extended to a position of 2 ° instead of the necessary 5 ° to 25 °. All three crew members survived.
  • (A) April 8th - A British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) (G-ARWE) Boeing 707-465had toreturn to Heathrow Airport after take-off due to an engine fire . The engine stalled during the landing, but the fire continued. After the successful emergency landing, the pilots and flight engineers left the cockpit without going through the necessary checklists. Therefore, among other things, more and more fuel was pumped into the fire under the machine. Then the entire machine was evacuated. 5 of the 127 people on board were killed (see also BOAC flight 712 ) .
  • May 3 - A Lockheed L-188A Electra of Braniff Airways (N9707C) crashed on the flight from Houston to Dallas near Dawson , Texas , during a heavy storm off after the crew had recently launched a 180 degree turn . The machine got out of control due to the extreme turbulence; during the interception attempt, it was overloaded at 4.35 g , whereupon it broke apart. All 80 passengers and 5 crew members died in the accident.
  • September 3 - An Ilyushin Il-18E of the Bulgarian Bulair (LZ-BEG) was flown into the ground on the return flight from Dresden on the approach to Burgas Airport . When flying around showers and a thunderstorm, the machine was flown off-road at a height of almost 200 meters near Karnobat, 45 kilometers from the destination airport. In this CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ), 47 of the 89 people on board were killed.
  • September 15 - A Vickers Viscount 827 of the Brazilian VASP (PP-SRE) had an accident on a training flight 7.5 kilometers from São Paulo-Congonhas Airport ( Brazil ). Take-offs and landings with touch-and-go as well as the simulated failure of one and two engines were practiced. The two pilots, the only occupants, were killed, as was a person on the ground.
  • September 30th - On a training flight with the Airspeed Ambassador G-AMAG of Dan-Air , the right main landing gear could not be locked. The pilots evaded to Manston Airport (England) and landed there belly on a foam carpet . The machine was then beyond repair, but both crew members survived.

1969

  • (A) January 18 - A Boeing 727-22C of United Airlines (N7434U) crashed 20 km west of the starting airport Los Angeles with a complete nightly instrument failure in the Santa Monica Bay . The aircraft had been operated with a defective generator No. 3 for three days, but this was permissible. About 90 seconds after take-off, the fire warning for engine no. 1 sounded, which was then correctly switched off. Shortly thereafter, the remaining No. 2 generator failed and the electrical standby system did not operate. During the instrument failure, the machine crashed into the Pacific . All 38 people on board were killed (see also United Air Lines flight 266 ) .
  • (A) March 16 - A Douglas DC-9-32 (YV-C-AVD) leasedby VIASA from the Venezuelan AVENSA with 84 people on board crashedin a suburbnear Maracaibo , Venezuela , with all occupants and 71 people on the ground died (155 in total); 100 more were injured. The machine had hardly been able to gain height at takeoff (see also VIASA flight 742 ) .
  • March 20 - An Ilyushin Il-18 D of United Arab Airlines (SU-APC) , coming from Jedda ( Saudi Arabia ), had an accident while approaching Aswan airport and went up in flames. 100 people were killed, only five passengers survived. At the time of the accident, visibility was only around two to three kilometers. When approaching the poorly equipped airport in a sandstorm, the pilots flew below the decision height , also due to their excessive fatigue due to long working hours without suitable rest periods.
  • (A) April 7 - Shortly after the start of a Vickers Viscount 757 of Air Canada (CF THK) from the airport Sept-Îles a fire broke out in the left main landing gear bay. The pilots managed to fly the plane back to the airport, but engine no. 1 could not be switched off due to the fire and the brakes on the left main landing gear failed. The evacuation was carried out while the machine was rolling clockwise in a circle. During the evacuation, a passenger fell, was run over by the machine and was killed. The other 20 occupants of the machine survived the incident (see also Air Canada's Vickers Viscount accident near Sept-Îles ) .
  • June 5 - A Douglas DC-7B (SE-ERP) chartered by the Swedish Red Cross was shot down by a Nigerian MiG-17 near Eket, Nigeria . As part of famine relief during the Biafra War , the DC-7 was on its way to the Uli jungle runway to fly relief supplies there. The four-man crew was killed.
  • June 24 - A Convair 880 of Japan Airlines (JA8028) crashed on a training flight in Moses Lake (Washington) during a simulated engine failure at startup. Three of the five people on board were killed.
  • (A) July 6 - A Beechcraft 99 of the Air South (N844NS) crashed ten kilometers northwest of Monroe (Georgia) from. At its cruising altitude of 7,000 ft, the elevator trim began to trim the horizontal stabilizer to the stop ( full-nose-down position). The strength of both pilots was insufficientto overcomethe extremely trimmed position of the horizontal stabilizer with the control horn and to intercept the machine. The plane went into a nosedive; both wings broke off before the aircraft hit the ground almost vertically.   • July 16 - A Lockheed L-100 Hercules of Pacific Western Airlines (CF-PWO) loaded with machines landed at the airfield in Caycaya (or Cayaya, Caucaya) ( Peru ) in hazy or foggy weather . The right wing hit the ground and broke off, the plane slid off the runway to the right. All crew members on the cargo flight survived. In addition to pilot errors, the lack of air traffic control and permanently installed landing aids were listed as causes.
  • July 26th - A fire broke out in the electrical room of a Sud Aviation Caravelle 6N of Air Algérie (7T-VAK) during a charter flight from Marseille to Hassi Messaoud ( Algeria ). The pilots tried to reach Biskra airport for an emergency landing. However, the plane crashed in flames while approaching Ain Naga, 45 kilometers east-southeast of Biskra. Of the 37 occupants, only 4 crew members survived. All 30 passengers and 3 of the crew members were killed.
  • September 21 - A Boeing 727-64 of Mexicana (XA-SEJ) hit 1,500 meters before the runway at Mexico City airport , jumped back up and collided with a railway embankment. The aircraft was in the correct landing configuration. The cause could not be clarified because the flight data recorder had not been working for days and the voice recorder had already been expanded. Of the 118 inmates, 27 were killed.
  • Nov. 1 - A Convair CV-440 of Linjeflyg (SE-BSU) crashed during a training flight on the Stockholm / Arlanda airport . With a simulated engine failure, the machine got out of control; there was a crash landing. All four pilots on board were uninjured, but the aircraft was a total economic loss.
  • Dec. 3 - A Boeing 707-328B of Air France (F-BHSZ) en route from Santiago de Chile to Paris crashed shortly after a stopover at the Caracas airport following start about six kilometers into the sea. All 62 people on board were killed. According to a leaked secret report, an explosive charge could have been in the left main landing gear bay.

1970

  • March 6th - The only Handley Page HP-137 Jetstream 1 of the airline Bavaria (D-INAH) had an accident on the approach to the Swiss airfield Samedan . The aircraft that took off in Munich-Riem suffered an engine damage on the approach, whereby the pilots lost control and the aircraft crashed about three kilometers from the runway threshold. The two crew members and all nine passengers were killed in the accident.
  • June 1 - After two failed attempts to approach runway 18 at Tripoli Airport (Libya), a Tupolev Tu-104A of the Czechoslovak CSA (OK-NDD) was flown into the area when the pilots made a third attempt from the opposite direction. In the controlled flight into terrain accident , all people on board were killed, ten crew members and three passengers.
  • July 12 - A Bristol Britannia 312F of the Argentine Aero Transportes Entre Rios (LV-JNL) crashed on the Buenos Aires-Ezeiza ( Argentina ) the go-trial . With a visibility of zero meters, the machine turned to the left, brushed a mobile radar device with its undercarriage, hit the ground and slid about another 600 meters. This resulted in a total loss of the aircraft. All 12 occupants of the cargo flight, 5 crew members and 7 passengers survived the accident.
  • July 27 - The crew of a Douglas DC-8-63AF of the Flying Tiger Line (N785FT) carried out an approach using precision approach radar to the Okinawa-Naha Air Force Base in poor visibility conditions . In doing so, she lowered the aircraft so far below the glide path that the machine hit the water 670 meters from the runway. All four crew members died in this CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ).
  • November 4 - The Handley Page Herald I-tive of Itavia crashed upon landing at the airport Rome Ciampino (Italy) during a training flight, precipitated as an engine. The two pilots, the only occupants of the machine, survived the accident. The badly damaged machine was shut down, used to obtain spare parts and finally scrapped in 1974.
  • December 31 - A Nord 262 owned by Rousseau Aviation (F-BNGB) disappeared on a charter flight from Algiers to Menorca Airport in Spain . There were 27 passengers and 3 crew members on board. The Spanish side suspected that the machine crashed about 100 km from the Algerian coast after an emergency call was sent by its pilots.
