On VIASA flight 742 on March 16, 1969, a DC-9 -32 leased from AVENSA crashed shortly after take-off from Grano de Oro airport ( ⊙ ) in Maracaibo . All 84 inmates and 71 people on the ground died. In addition to overloading, the cause of the crash was faulty temperature sensors on the runway, which prevented the pilots from correctly configuring the aircraft. So far (August 2016) it is the worst accident of a DC-9 and was considered the worst in Venezuela until the crash of a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82 on West Caribbean Airways flight 708 in 2005 .

The aircraft was a new DC-9-32 with the air vehicle registration YV-C-AVD, with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D equipped -7 and had completed its first flight only in disguise year.

The plane took off from Grano de Oro Airport in Maracaibo after a layover , climbed to 150 ft (45 m ) and then crashed into the La Trinidad district. All 84 inmates and 71 people on the ground died.
