List of the most serious aviation accidents in Germany

This list includes serious aviation accidents on German territory with more than 20 fatalities. In the case of the aircraft accidents highlighted in blue , the number of victims is controversial or there are different details.

Oct 14, 1953	Sabena	Convair CV-240	44	Shortly after taking off from Frankfurt Airport , a Convair CV-240 crashed as a result of a stall. The cause was lead deposits on the spark plugs of the engines.
Aug 10, 1955	US Air Force	two Fairchild C-119	66	During a training flight, two C-119s collided and crashed near Edelweiler . ( see plane collision at Edelweiler )
0Feb 6, 1958	British European Airways	Airspeed AS 57	23	During the third attempt to take off in Munich , an Airspeed Ambassador rolled over the end of the snow-covered runway and exploded. Manchester United players were among the victims . ( see British European Airways Flight 609 ).
Dec 17, 1960	US Air Force	Convair CV-340	52	Shortly after takeoff crashed a Convair the US Air Force on a tram. All occupants on the plane and 32 people on the tram died. ( see plane crash on December 17, 1960 in Munich )
28 Mar 1961	ČSA	Ilyushin Il-18	52	For reasons that are not fully understood, an Ilyushin Il-18 crashed near Nuremberg . ( see ČSA flight 511 )
May 22, 1962	US Navy	WV-2Q / EC-121M	26th	A Lockheed Constellation broke up near Markt Schwaben. ( see crash of the reconnaissance aircraft Navy 131390 )
June 26, 1963	Belgian Air Force	Fairchild C-119	38	Near Detmold , a C-119 was accidentally hit by mortar shells while flying over the Senne military training area , which British troops had fired during an exercise. Nine parachutists were able to leave the machine before it crashed.
Jan. 28, 1966	Lufthansa	Convair CV-440	46	Shortly after the go-around in Bremen there was a stall, which caused the Convair CV-40 to crash. ( see Lufthansa flight 005 )
0Aug 9, 1968	British Eagle	Vickers Viscount Model 700	48	Probably after the failure of the on-board electronics, the machine got into a flight position that exceeded its structural load limits. The plane crashed on the federal highway 9 near Langenbruck . ( see British Eagle Flight 802 )
06 Sep 1971	Paninternational	BAC 1-11	22nd	Shortly after take-off in Hamburg, both engines on a BAC 1-11 failed . The pilots carried out an emergency landing on Federal Motorway 7 near Hasloh , during which the machine collided with a bridge. 99 inmates survived. ( see Paninternational flight 112 )
Aug 14, 1972	Interflug	Ilyushin Il-62	156	The stern of an Il-62 broke off due to a fire in the rear underfloor hold . In the crash near Königs Wusterhausen , all 156 inmates died. ( see plane disaster in Königs Wusterhausen )

Sep 11 1982	US Army	CH-47C Chinook	46	After the transfer case failed, causing the two rotors to become wedged, a Chinook transport helicopter manned by parachutists crashed onto the A 656 motorway . ( see helicopter crash in Mannheim 1982 )
Dec 12, 1986	Aeroflot	Tupolev Tu-134	72	Before landing at Berlin-Schönefeld airport, a Tupolev Tu-134 hit a forest between the approach lanes. Ten inmates survived. ( see Aeroflot flight 892 )

Dec 22, 1991	Classic wings	Douglas DC-3	28	Due to pilot errors, a DC-3 collided with the Hoher Nistler mountain . Four inmates survived. ( see flight accident at the Hoher Nistler )

Aviation accidents outside Germany with a high number of German victims

• December 3, 1972: Spantax flight 275 ; a Convair CV-990 had an accident on Tenerife . The 148 killed passengers were mostly tourists from Germany.
• September 10, 1976: Plane collision in Zagreb ; one of the two planes that crashed in Croatia (then Yugoslavia) carried 106 German vacationers.
• February 6, 1996: Birgenair flight 301 ; a Boeing 757 had an accident after taking off from Puerto Plata airport, most of the 189 fatalities were German tourists.
• July 25, 2000: Air France flight 4590 ; 96 German travelers and 13 other people were killed on board the Concorde , which had an accident in Paris on a special flight for the Peter Deilmann shipping company .
• March 24, 2015: Germanwings flight 9525 ; when an Airbus A320 crashes intentionally in France a. 72 Germans perished.
