On March 22, 1952, a Douglas DC-6 crashed for unknown reasons on KLM flight 592 near Frankfurt Airport .

Flight history

KLM's Douglas DC-6, built in 1948 and named Koningin Juliana , was on a scheduled flight from Johannesburg to Amsterdam with scheduled stops in Brazzaville , Rome and Frankfurt am Main . At 6:38 a.m., the plane took off from Rome Ciampino Airport for its onward flight to Frankfurt .

At around 10:45 a.m., the pilots reported to the air traffic controller that they had passed the Staden radio beacon at an altitude of 4,000 feet (around 1,200 meters). The pilots were then supposed to report again when overflighting the Offenbach radio beacon , but this did not happen. Eyewitnesses saw the aircraft north of Neu Isenburg at an altitude of only about 60 meters. At around 10:50 a.m., the Douglas DC-6 hit some trees and pulled a 300 meter swath through the forest before stopping. Four seriously injured people were saved before the plane exploded. Of the four survivors, two later died in hospital. The cause of the accident could not be determined. It was the worst aircraft accident on German soil up to the plane collision near Edelweiler with 66 dead.
