The Ōyama ( Japanese 大 山 ) is a mountain range on the southwestern edge of the Tanzawa mountain range in the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa .

history

Ōyama and Fujisan seen from Yokohama (Tsuzuki-ku).

Because of its regular shape, which is reminiscent of Mount Fuji , the Ōyama (literally: "big mountain") was worshiped religiously in early times. Since the Hōreki era (1751–1764), pilgrimages to Ōyama and the Shintō shrine Ōyama-Afuri-jinja on its southern slope have enjoyed great popularity. For this purpose Ōyama pilgrimage routes ( Ōyama-michi , Ōyama-dō or Ōyama-kaidō ) were laid out from different directions. In the Edo period , pilgrimages to Ōyama were often combined with trips to Enoshima .

Location and surroundings

The Ōyama rises abruptly from the southern Kantō plain and can therefore be easily seen from the metropolitan area of Tokyo-Yokohama even in poor visibility. From its summit there is a view of the southern Kantō plain and Sagami Bay . The Ōyama is separated from the rest of the Tanzawa Mountains by the 761 m high Yabitsu Pass.

Development and ascent

From the south-east a funicular , which overcomes a distance of 0.8 km, climbs 278 meters, leads to the lower shrine ( 下 Af ) of Afuri-jinja at an altitude of 700 m . The valley station of the funicular can be reached by bus from Isehara station on the Odakyū Odawara line . There are numerous small shops between the bus stop and the valley station that offer local specialties and handicrafts. A hiking or pilgrim path leads from the lower shrine to the summit, on which the main shrine of Afuri-jinja is located. From the south west goes from the Yabitsu pass (bus connection to Hadano) leads to the top, from the east lead trails from belonging to Atsugi Kōtakuji- Onsen or Nanasawa-onsen to the peak.
