Lists of aviation accidents

The accident involving Maritime Central Airways in Sandwich Bay occurred on May 18, 1952. On that day, a Boeing-Canada PB2B-1 Canso A (PBY-5A) operated by Maritime Central Airways (CF-FAN) on a charter cargo flight had an accident from Gander Airport to Cartwright should be carried out on landing at Sandwich Bay . All three people on board the machine were killed in the accident.

machine

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing-Canada PB2B-1 Canso A with the serial number 22023 built by Boeing Canada in Vancouver in 1943 for the Royal Canadian Air Force . The twin-engine amphibious aircraft had a retractable landing gear for landings on land and a buoyant fuselage for water landings. The machine was equipped with two radial engines of the Pratt & Whitney R-1830-92 type, each with an output of 882 kW (1200 hp).

Inmates

On the cargo flight there was only a three-person crew on board the machine, consisting of a flight captain, a first officer and a flight engineer.

the accident

The machine loaded with cargo took off from Gander at 1:17 p.m. local time. On the approach to Cartwright, eyewitnesses watched the aircraft descend with its landing gear down on its final approach for a water landing on Sandwich Bay near Cartwright Harbor. When the wheels touched the water, the machine came to an abrupt stop. The machine reared up vertically in the water, then the stern swiveled from the 90-degree angle to an angle of about 45 degrees. All three crew members were killed in the accident.

root cause

The cause of the accident was the failure of the pilot in charge to ensure that the landing gear was retracted for the water landing. When the gear wheels touched the water, a leverage effect was created, the machine was then levered into a vertical position in the water.
