The R-1830 Twin Wasp is an air-cooled aircraft engine with 14  cylinders from the US manufacturer Pratt & Whitney . After the R-1535, it was the second double radial engine (2 × 7 cylinder) from the company's Wasp engine series . Serial production ran from 1932 to 1951, because of the great need in the Second World War as under license in areas such as Chevrolet - or Buick - Division of General Motors . With 173,618 units built, the R-1830 is the most popular piston aircraft engine.

The four-stroke engine has a total displacement of 30.2 liters (corresponds to 1830 cubic inches , as can be derived from the type designation). It is designed as a square, which means that stroke and bore are the same (5.5 inches corresponds to 139.7 mm). The first run and the first flight took place in 1931. From 1942, a version enlarged to 2,000 cubic inches was produced as the P&W R-2000 .

In order to achieve a maximum output of over 1000 hp, the R-1830 Twin Wasp requires aviation fuel with the highest octane number ( Avgas 100 ). It was used in many aircraft, for example in the Consolidated B-24 Liberator , the Martin A-22 Maryland , the Douglas DC-3 or in their military versions C-47 and Dakota , the Consolidated PBY Catalina , the Consolidated PB2Y Coronado and the Grumman F4F Wildcat as well as on British aircraft such as the Short S. 25 Sunderland and the Bristol Beaufort .

Others

Like most radial engines, this engine also has a relatively large oil loss and oil consumption. The loss of oil comes from the fact that when the engine is switched off, the engine oil remaining in the crankcase seeps in the downward cylinders past the pistons into the combustion chambers and then drips outside through the exhaust valves. In operation, an oil consumption of between four and twelve liters per flight hour is not unusual.
