Pratt & Whitney Canada is a subsidiary of the US aerospace company Pratt & Whitney , based in East Hartford, Connecticut. The company's headquarters are in Longueuil , Québec , Canada . The company develops and produces smaller aircraft engines for regional and business aircraft as well as helicopter engines. The company was founded in 1928 and employs around 6,200 people at various locations in Canada (9,200 worldwide). Today, more than 700 airlines worldwide use engines from Pratt & Whitney Canada.

Pratt & Whitney Canada was founded in 1928 by James Young, who was licensed to refurbish the Pratt & Whitney radial piston engines. The company played a major role in the repair, overhaul and production of aircraft engines during World War II. A few years later, small jet engines were developed and built, including the PT6 engine . With the development of this engine, the company took an important step closer to the production of gas turbines, at the beginning of the gas turbine era. Through intensive research and development, the company has achieved a globally recognized top position in the construction of small jet engines. The first production plant was opened in 1952. In 1971 the JT15D jet engine was developed and produced at the request of the Cessna Aircraft Company . In 1978 the company developed and manufactured the PW100 and several PW100-powered engines for the Embraer's EMB-120 aircraft. In 1981 the 20,000 engine was handed over to the Cessna Aircraft Company. In 1983 the PW200 engine was developed in cooperation with Helicopter Textron and MBB Germany . In 1985 the PW300 engine , which was intended for larger business jets, was developed and produced . In 1986 chose Boeing for its 747-400 jumbo for an auxiliary power unit of the type PW901A . In 1995, the development of the PW150 turboprop engine for the De Havilland DHC-8-400 began. In the same year the certification of the PW500 turbofan engines took place . The first engines are used on the Cessna Citation Bravo. In 2000, the company delivered the 50,000 engine to Raytheon Aircraft Company. In 2003, the Cessna Aircraft Company selected the PW615F engine for their Citation Mustang VLJ aircraft. Eclipse Aviation Corp. chose the PW610F for their Eclipse 500 VLJ aircraft. In 2003 Pratt & Whitney Canada celebrated its 75th birthday. In 2005 Embraer decided to use the PW617F engine for the Embraer Phenom 100 VLJ aircraft. In 2006, the company delivered the 60,000 engine to Dassault Aviation. In the same year, the company announced that it would make a $ 1.5 billion investment in research and development over the next five years. In 2008 the development of the PW800 engine began . On May 6, 2011, the Mirabel Aerospace Center opened at Montreal-Mirabel International Airport in Quebec, Canada. In this work u. a. the PurePower PW1524G engine for the Airbus A220 , as well as the advanced PurePower PW800 engines, built and tested for the new generations of business jets. The company has invested $ 360 million in the site. Up to 300 people are to be employed in the plant.
