The Pratt & Whitney R-1340 (also called P & W " Wasp ") was the first aircraft engine from the US manufacturer Pratt & Whitney . The engine from the P & W "Wasp" engine family was a great commercial success and was used in numerous aircraft and helicopters .

The air-cooled nine-cylinder - radial engine has a displacement of 1,340 cubic inches (about 22 liters). After the initially 430 hp R-1340 had successfully completed its first test bench runs at the end of December 1925, 34,966 engines were manufactured by 1960.
