Francisco Asenjo Barbieri
Francisco de Asís Asenjo Barbieri (born August 3, 1823 in Madrid ; † February 19, 1894 ibid) was a Spanish composer and author of works of literature and music history.
He had an excellent, varied education and entered the Madrid Conservatory in 1837, where he studied piano and composition with Pedro Albéniz (1795–1855), singing with Baltasar Saldoni (1807–1889) and clarinet. Then began a professionally unsteady period, which was also determined by his material need. He tried himself as a composer, music teacher, choir director and music journalist before his breakthrough in 1851 with the performance of the three-act Zarzuela "Jugar con fuego". Afterwards he was part of the cultural life in Madrid both as a composer and as an author until his death. In 1874 he crowned the musical genre Zarzuela with his three-act " El Barberillo de Lavapies ", a work that also found its way to many other countries.
With the performance of the so-called Zarzuela grande "Jugar con fuego" Barbieri started the renaissance of this typical Spanish stage music genre and contributed to the long-lasting success of these works by creating many other works. Several other Spanish composers followed suit.
