Cartwright is a municipality ( town ) in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . Port Hope Simpson was founded in 1775. The parish was named after George Cartwright , an English army officer and fur trader.

The community is located on the northeast shore of Sandwich Bay in southeast Labrador .
Cartwright owns a small airfield ( IATA : YRF). The nearly 95 km long Route 516 connects Cartwright with the Trans-Labrador Highway . There is also a ferry connection to Rigolet and Black Tickle .
history
Between 1953 and 1968, the Cartwright Air Station radar station was operated as part of the Distant Early Warning Line .
population
In the 2016 census, the community had a population of 427. Five years earlier it was 504. Thus, the population has decreased in recent years. The population consists mainly of Métis and Inuit .
