Basse-Terre ( Guadeloupe Creole : Bastè , German roughly: Niederes Land ) is a municipality in Guadeloupe and the capital of the region and the French overseas department and the arrondissement . It has 10,058 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

The community is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Basse-Terre .

Basse-Terre is located at the foot of the active volcano La Soufrière , at the mouth of the Rivière aux Herbes, in the southwest of the island of Basse-Terre of the same name .

history

The settlement of the area of ​​today's Basse-Terre began after peace was made with the Caribs in the region around 1640 and Charles Houël, Governor of Guadeloupe, settled on the Rivière aux Herbes. From 1650 he had Fort Louis Delgrès (formerly Fort Saint-Charles) built in the south , which protected the governor's city.
