Grand-Bourg ( Marie-Galante-Creole : Gwanbou ) is a municipality with 5012 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the southwest of the Caribbean island of Marie-Galante . Politically, it belongs to the French overseas department of Guadeloupe .

The northeastern neighboring municipality is Saint-Louis , to the east borders the municipality of Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante . The three communities on the island form their own community association , the Communauté de communes de Marie-Galante .

A coral reef lies in front of the extensive beach to the southeast of the town .

history

The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and has belonged to France since the first French colonists landed in 1648.

economy

Import trade, fishing and tourism are important industries. The cultivation of sugar cane , which is partly processed into rum in two local distilleries , also plays an important role .

Town twinning

The partner municipality of Grand-Bourg is the French city of Bagneux near Paris in the Hauts-de-Seine department.
