Bouillante ( Guadeloupe Creole : Bouyant ) is a municipality with 7024 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe . Each sub-area of the municipality belongs to the cantons of Vieux-Habitants and Sainte-Rose-1 , until its dissolution in 2015 Bouillante was the capital of the canton of the same name .
geography
Bouillante is located in the western part of the island of Basse-Terre , on the Côte sous le vent , a coast on the Caribbean Sea . The municipality has a portion of a mountainous landscape, so that the highest point is at 1088 m above sea level. M. is located. The populated area is divided along the coast into a northern and a southern district. Both are linked to the Guadeloupe transport network by roads. The neighboring municipalities are Vieux-Habitants , Petit-Bourg and Pointe-Noire . The municipality of Bouillante is part of the Guadeloupe National Park .
history
Bouillante is the first town in Guadeloupe to be mentioned in a document - a mention dates back to 1638. The land was particularly suitable for growing coffee and cocoa .
Economy and Infrastructure
A geothermal power plant has been in operation in Bouillante since 1984 . Besides the facility in Soultz-sous-Forêts , which is still at the trial stage, it is the only one in France.
