Baillif ( Guadeloupe Creole : Bayif ) is a municipality with 5605 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the southwest of the island of Basse-Terre in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles .
geography
The community stretches from the coast to the 1354 m high Grand Sans-Toucher. It is considered a suburb of the capital Basse-Terre . The place name goes back to Robert Baillif, one of the first residents of the community.
Attractions
The tower ruin named after the Dominican missionary Père Labat is classified as Inscrit Monument Historique . The tower was built in the founding phase of the first village at the end of the 17th century.
Personalities
- The French violin virtuoso, composer and conductor Joseph Bologne , known as Chevalier de Saint Georges (1745–1799), was born in Baillif.
