Vieux-Fort is located at the transition between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea on the southern tip of Basse-Terre at the foot of the Le Caraïbe mountain range , 8 kilometers southwest of the municipality of Trois-Rivières . history

Charles Lienard de l'Olive was a settler from France, from the trading company Compagnie des Iles d'Amérique received (Company of the American Islands) permission to settle in Guadeloupe and manage the populated islands. He landed in the north of Basse-Terre in 1635 and migrated with the settlers to the south of the island. At Vieux-Fort he had the first fort on the island built. It gave the village its name, Vieux-Fort means "old fort". Today's Vieux-Fort was built around 1648 at about the same time as Saint-Louis , by immigrants from the Antilles .

Attractions

Fort Olive was built in 1636 and named it in 1643. It has the oldest bell tower on the island and is known for its lighthouse, which was built in 1955. At the lighthouse you have a view of the Îles des Saintes . The fort now also houses the Center de broderie ( embroidery center ), which exhibits lace .

The church dates from the 18th century. Its bell tower was entered in the supplementary register of Monuments historiques in 1978 .

economy

In Vieux-Fort, handicrafts and the textile industry have established themselves. Out of town, the land is particularly suitable for agriculture due to earlier volcanic eruptions .
