Terre-de-Bas ( Guadeloupe Creole : Tèdébà ) is a municipality with 1046 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and an island in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe . Terre-de-Bas is not to be confused with the larger Guadaloupe island, similarly named, Basse-Terre .

geography

Like its neighboring island of Terre-de-Haut , the island is located in the Îles des Saintes archipelago (Islands of the Saints) in the Caribbean Sea . The town center is 41 meters above sea level in the central massif .

history

The Îles des Saintes were discovered in November 1493 by Christopher Columbus (1451–1506). In 1648 the islands fell to France.

Attractions

Jean-Pierre Fidelin had a pottery built around 1760 . The pottery mainly made molds that were used to make sugar . Each sugar factory had over 2000 of these shapes. The pottery was in operation from 1760 to 1860. Thereafter, the focus was on making Bay and pottery fell into disrepair. The buildings are privately owned and were classified as Monument historique in 1997 .

Culture

The fishermen of Terre-de-Bas have been wearing wide - brimmed hats made of bamboo, known as “salako”, since the middle of the 19th century . They are made in traditional handicraft.

Economy and Infrastructure

Terre-de-Bas is quieter and less frequented than Terre-de-Haut, but tourism is an important line of business alongside fishing and agriculture. Mainly cassava , corn , cotton , sugar cane and coffee are grown.

The D213 runs in a ring through the southern part of the island.
