history

The old name of Petit-Canal was Mancenillier . Mancenillier is the French word for Hippomane mancinella , a milkweed plant . Petit-Canal was founded towards the end of the 17th century. The sugar cane sticks were brought to the Duval sugar factory via the Canal des Rotours and through the municipality. The Canal des Rotours was the great canal and the parish was renamed Petit-Canal ('small canal'). The sugar factory later became a rum distillery and eventually closed.

In 1925 there were violent clashes between sugar cane planters and the gendarmerie . The reason was the low sugar cane price that the Duval factory was paying at the time. Six people were killed and the price of sugar cane was raised from 66.6 francs per ton to 73 francs per ton.

Attractions

The Saint-Philippe-Saint-Jacques church was built in 1931.

The old slave prison was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques ('historical monuments') in 1991. The building is in poor condition. It was built in 1844 after the previous prison was destroyed by an earthquake.
