Basse-Terre ( Guadeloupe Creole : Bastè , German roughly: Niederes Land ) is a municipality in Guadeloupe and the capital of the region and the French overseas department and the arrondissement . It has 10,058 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
The community is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Basse-Terre .
geography
Basse-Terre is located at the foot of the active volcano La Soufrière , at the mouth of the Rivière aux Herbes, in the southwest of the island of Basse-Terre of the same name .
history
The settlement of the area of today's Basse-Terre began after peace was made with the Caribs in the region around 1640 and Charles Houël, Governor of Guadeloupe, settled on the Rivière aux Herbes. From 1650 he had Fort Louis Delgrès (formerly Fort Saint-Charles) built in the south , which protected the governor's city.

- Notre-Dame-de-Guadeloupe Cathedral , built in 1736 in Baroque style, main church of the Basse-Terre diocese, MH since 1975
- Church Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel , extended from the second half of the 17th century in the 19th and 20th centuries, MH since 2006
- Seat of the prefecture , called Palais d'Orléans , built in 1936 according to plans by the architect Ali Tur, MH since 1997
- Fort Louis Delgrès , built as a defensive fortification from 1765, MH since 1977

Town twinning
The twin town of Basse-Terre is the town of Puducherry in southern India, which was the capital of French India until 1954 under the name Pondichéry .
