← German championship 1913/14 |
After five years without football at the national level, a German football championship , the thirteenth, was held again in 1920 .
The First World War had changed almost everything in Germany. Only the hosting of the first championship round after the war seemed at first glance to be excluded. As before the war, seven regional champions (South, West, North, Middle, Berlin-Brandenburg, Southeast, Northeast) were determined who, together with the defending champion (the last pre-war champion, the SpVgg Fürth), played off the German champions in cup mode.
But at second glance, enormous changes were also visible in German football. First there were the territorial changes in Germany (cession of North Schleswig , West Prussia , Alsace-Lorraine and Eupen-Malmedy ), which affected six of the seven football regions; however, the ceded areas were usually not football strongholds.
Then in 1920 the social rifts in the new Weimar Republic became visible. In addition to the middle-class German Football Association , the workers 'sports organization, the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association (ATSB), held a German football championship in 1920. TSV Fürth was the first champion of the ATSB .
Other associations representing social groups were to follow: in 1921 the German Youth Force (DJK, organization of the Catholic Church), in 1925 the German Turnerschaft (DT) and in 1931 the Rotsport (organization of the communists, a spin-off from the ATSB).
What was also new, however, was the enormous boom that football experienced after the war. This was evident not only from the numerous new club foundations and increasing membership numbers in the clubs, but also from the number of spectators. 35,000 visitors wanted to see the first post-war final in Frankfurt am Main , and even the average number of spectators for the quarter and semi-finals, at around 7,160, was higher than that of the final in 1914 with around 6,000.
The sporting focus had also shifted. With VfB Leipzig and SpVgg Fürth , only two teams took part in this final round that had already taken part in a championship final round before the war. The championship in 1920 saw six newcomers to the final round, among whom, 1. FC Nürnberg, played a team that was not only to become German champions for the first time, but also to become the most successful team of the 1920s.
