Willy Boess

Willy Böß (born March 19, 1896 ; † unknown) was a German football player . He was two German champions with 1. FC Nürnberg .

Career

Willy Böß played from 1913 as a center forward for the first team of 1. FC Nürnberg. This function is remarkable because Boess himself was of a small figure. So he did not act as a classic "breaker" in the center of the storm, who exploited flanks with a strong header, but as a "connecting striker" prepared goals for his neighbors from the half positions. Boss himself met less often. One of his most important goals was the decisive 1-0 win against Norden-Nordwest Berlin in the semi-finals of the 1922 finals . Such goals, however, did not spare him from criticism in the club newspaper, in which Hans Hoffmann wrote about Boess in March 1922: “That is the annoying, often recognized deficiency of our attack series, that you have the wedge and the force in the middle against a strong defense is missing. As tactically as our center forward dominates the field perfectly, he fails in front of the goal, the essential work is left to the two inner strikers, who are our real, but also our only attack weapon. "

Nevertheless, the “only weakness of the storm”, according to the club newspaper, was good enough to contribute to winning the first German championship in 1920 as well as to successfully defending the title in 1921 . Outside the square, Boess was considered an unbeatable mood cannon. On the field, he compensated for his physical inferiority with tenacity and fighting power, which, however, was joined by a dark side of uncontrollability. In the famous endless final of 1922 against Hamburger SV , in the second final game in Boess, he was carried away to assault Albert Beier in the 25th minute , which referee Peco Bauwens recorded as follows: “An advance from the inner Nuremberg storm came to a standstill in the penalty area. The ball was given by a Hamburg player in a long stroke to the left wing, and the ball went to the center line. When the high kick had taken place, I saw how Boess, although the ball was gone, raised his leg against a hamburger lying on the ground. Thereupon I sent Boess off the field. ”The dismissal against Boess opened the elimination of club players in this final, which had to be canceled before the beginning of the second extra time because Nuremberg had no more eight players on the field. Böß was subsequently banned by the DFB for several months. Nevertheless, the still banned Boess went on a friendly game trip to Spain in January 1923. When the club was missing several players from an international match there and another player was injured, the club started with the consent of Peco Bauwens Boess, who was in Barcelona. Because of the violation of the ban, the club was subsequently prohibited by the DFB from playing games abroad for six months and a maximum of five games in the following six months. This punishment hit the club hard, as traveling abroad in times of inflation was the best way to earn hard currency instead of laundry baskets full of worthless Reichsmarks.

As a result, Ludwig Wieder , who joined the club in 1922, ousted Böß from the center-forward position. In March 1924, the club newspaper wrote conciliatory about Boess, who played 185 games for the club's first team: "In his heyday, our Boess was just as good a conductor as Schaffer , he just lacked the weight of personality." In the 1930s Years elected to the members in the council of elders of the association.
