Goyave ( Guadeloupe Creole : Gwayav ) is a municipality with 7555 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe . The inhabitants are called Goyavien (ne) s.
geography
The village is in the Basse-Terre and is integrated into the agglomeration around Pointe-à-Pitre . It is part of the Guadeloupe National Park and is 8 kilometers southeast of Petit-Bourg . The Petite Rivière Goyave flows through the municipality.
history
Many guava trees grew in the vicinity of the municipality, which is why it was called Goyave (French for guava). The word Goyave as a name for the plant originated when the Spaniards adopted the word guayaba from the Arawak language .
The grandfather of the poet Francis Jammes was mayor of Goyave in the 19th century.
Culture and sights
The La Pépinière de Blonzac water garden is dedicated to Manman Dlo, a mythical sea and river goddess of the Caribbean . The garden is a collection of many different Caribbean plant species, is used for growing plants and for walking, and can be visited on weekends.
The waterfalls of the Moreau river are located in the south of Goyave in the forest of the mountains and can only be reached via a footpath.
The Ilet Fortune is an island that lies off Goyave in the Caribbean Sea . There is a nudist beach there.
