Abai ( Kazakh and Russian Абай ) is a city in Kazakhstan with around 28,802 inhabitants. It is located in the Karagandy area , 30 kilometers southwest of the city of Karagandy .

About 54% of the population are Russian and 21% Kazakhs , besides there are many other nationalities.
history
The city was founded in 1949 as the settlement of Scherubaj-Nura ( Kazakh Шерубай-Нұра ; Russian Чурубай-Нура ). The city has had its current name since 1961. It was named after the Kazakh poet Abai Qunanbajuly .

As in most of the cities around Karagandy, the economy is characterized by mining .
