Satbayev ( Kazakh Сәтбаев / Sätbajev ; Russian Сатпаев / Satpajew is a city in the) Province Karaganda in Kazakhstan . It was founded in 1954 under the name Nikolski. In honor of Qanysch Îmantajuly Satbayev , the city was renamed Satbayev in 1990.
Geographical location
The city is located in the Karagandy area, only seven kilometers from Shezqasghan . The city is located about 550 kilometers west of the provincial capital Karagandy and 760 kilometers southwest of the capital Nur-Sultan .
population
Sätbajew has 62,949 inhabitants (as of 2020). 59.7 percent of the population are Kazakhs , 23.6 percent are Russian and 16.7 percent are of other origins.
history
The place was founded in 1954 as a workers' settlement Nikolski (Никольский). In 1973 the place was granted city rights and was therefore no longer under the administration of the nearby city of Sheqasghan. The city was renamed in 1990 in honor of the geologist Qanysch Îmantajuly Sätbajew .
Culture and sights
Buildings
The Russian Orthodox St. Nicholas Church and the mosque, which also runs a Koran school, were commissioned by the Kazakhmys company . The two buildings are opposite each other in the city center.
Sports
The city is home to the HK Kasachmys ice hockey team . The football team FK Kasachmys played in the highest Kazakh league in 2009.
In the center of the city there is a sports complex, which includes an ice rink , a swimming pool , an indoor soccer field and a few gyms .
economy
The city of Satbayev is characterized by mining in particular. The ores extracted in numerous shafts ( underground mines ) and opencast mines are processed into copper and other non-ferrous metals in the nearby city of Sheqasghan .
