Qarqaraly ( Kazakh Қарқаралы ; Russian Каркаралинск Karkaralinsk , also Karkaraly ) is a city in central Kazakhstan with 8171 inhabitants (2020) in the east of the Qaraghandy region .

The city is the seat of the district of the same name.

location

Qarqaraly is located 220 km east of the regional capital Karagandy on the A20 highway . The next settlement to the east is called Burkutty.

The city is located directly to the east of the Qarqaraly National Park, founded in 1998 .

history

The city was founded in 1824 as a Cossack stanitsa . It lies at the foot of the Karkaraly mountain range .

On August 11, 1962, the cosmonaut Andrijan Nikolajew landed at the nearby settlement of Atassu with the spaceship Vostok 3 .
