Berrechid ( Arabic برشيد; Central Atlas Tamazight ⴱⴰⵔⵛⵉⴷ ) is the capital of the Moroccan province of Berrechid in the Casablanca-Settat region, with a population of almost 150,000 .

location

Berrechid is located in the historical region of Chaouia about 45 km (driving distance) south of Casablanca at an altitude of about 220  m . The city of El Jadida is located about 100 km west on the Atlantic Ocean . The inhabitants of the Chaouia region trace their ancestry back to Arab origins. However, the people of today's city are mostly of Berber descent; they mostly immigrated here from the mountain and desert regions of southern Morocco in the second half of the 20th century.

economy

The city is the center of an agrarian province that primarily supplies the markets of the city of Casablanca with its products. In addition, it forms the mercantile, craft, school and health center of the province. In the 1970s an industrial park (zone industrial) was set up, which - due to its geographical proximity to Casablanca - enjoyed enormous growth.

history

In the absence of written records, little is known about Berrechid's early history. The place is said to have been founded around 1800 by a family named Errachid ; it had fewer than 1,000 inhabitants in the 1920s. In 2009 Berrechid became the capital of the newly created province of the same name.

Attractions

The city has no historical or culturally significant sights; there is also no old town ( medina ). Overall, it makes a modern and spacious impression.
