The Jirishanca is a 6,094 meter high mountain in the Peruvian Andes , which at the northern end of the Cordillera Huayhuash is located. Its concise shape, an ice-covered pyramid, allows it to visually dominate the higher neighboring peaks. Because of its shape, the Jirishanca is also called "the Matterhorn of Peru". Its Indian name translates as "icy hummingbird beak", which also describes its shape pictorially.

history

After it was first mapped in 1939 by a group of explorers under the direction of Hans Kinzl , a number of first ascents of the very difficult summit were attempted. It wasn't until 1957 that two Austrians, Toni Egger and Siegfried Jungmeir , managed to climb the summit. Very few of the attempts that have followed since then have been successful. In the 1980s the area was almost completely closed to mountaineers, but since the 1990s more attempts have been made to climb it.
