The Dar es Salaam Airport is the main airport of Tanzania . Since 2005 it has been named Julius Nyerere International Airport after Julius Nyerere - the first president of the independent Republic of Tanzania, who was in office between 1962 and 1985 . It is located about twelve kilometers southwest of the center of Dar es Salaam and is well connected to the city center with a four-lane expressway built in the late 1980s . In 2004 , 1,011,392 passengers were handled here, which corresponds to a growth of 23.9% compared to the previous year.

In addition to the main runway, which is 3000 m long, there is a shorter one with a length of 1000 m.

history

The first airfield at Dar es Salaam, 1914

In 1914, the German colonial administration ordered the construction of a temporary airfield in Kurasini in the Temeke district . The cause was the beginning of the First World War and the only aircraft in German East Africa that was used for reconnaissance. Later there was Dar es Salaam Airport , Terminal I , in the Ukonga area . The steadily growing demand made it necessary to build a second terminal, which happened in 1979. It was inaugurated in October 1984 by President Julius Nyerere . 21 years later, in October 2005, Dar es Salaam International Airport (DIA) was renamed Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere International Airport . With Swiss , the airport is flown directly from Zurich, with KLM directly from Amsterdam.

Expansion of the airport

In April 2013 the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) signed a contract worth 275 billion shillings (equivalent to around 130 million euros) with the Dutch BAM International for the construction of a new terminal, which should provide capacity for 9.5 million passengers per year. In the new, 75,000 square meter terminal, only international traffic will then be handled.

The first expansion stage, which is expected to handle up to 3.5 million passengers per year, is expected to open at the end of 2017. [obsolete] Immediately afterwards, the second expansion stage will be built. With this expansion, the number of possible passengers should increase by another 2.5 million per year.

On the air side, 8 passenger boarding bridges are being built, one of which is A380- compatible, as well as parking positions for 15 wide-bodies and 20 narrow-bodies . On the land side, 2000 parking spaces and 40 new check-in counters will be available to passengers. In addition, the area for the retail business will be enlarged and three new lounges will be created. [outdated]
