The Aswan International Airport ( English Aswan International Airport ) is an airport of Aswan in Egypt .

Location and directions

The airport is in close proximity to the Aswan High Dam and 16 kilometers southwest of Aswan.

Navigation aids

The tower (TWR) sends and receives on the frequency : 118.3  MHz . The airport has various navigation aids. The runway 17/35 has an instrument landing system (ILS). The rotating radio beacon (VOR) transmits on frequency : 112.3  MHz with the identifier: ASN. A distance measuring equipment (DME) is present.

Incidents

On March 20, 1969, an Ilyushin Il-18 D of the United Arab Airlines (registration number SU-APC ), coming from Jedda , Saudi Arabia , crashed while approaching Aswan and went up in flames. 100 people were killed, only five passengers survived. At the time of the accident, visibility was only about two to three kilometers. When approaching the poorly equipped airport in a sandstorm, the pilots flew below the decision height , also due to their excessive fatigue due to long working hours without suitable rest periods.
