Les Cayes
Les Cayes , formerly Aux Cayes , is a port city in the Sud department and the third largest seaport in Haiti . According to an official estimate from 2015, the population is 86,780, the urban area 8.98 km²; the population of the entire municipality with urban and rural areas is 151,696 inhabitants, who live in an area of 219.11 km². There are factories in the town and surrounding areas that produce vetiver oil for export. Corn, sugar cane and rice are produced on a modest scale on the fertile soils.

The Île à Vache is ten kilometers off the coast of Les Cayes . From there, the privateers Henry Morgan and Laurent de Graff worked in the 17th century . Simon Bolivar called at the port of Les Cayes on December 24, 1818 to receive support for his freedom struggle. Among other things, he was able to borrow weapons and hire fighters here.
On August 12, 1831, the city was largely destroyed by a hurricane and nearly 2,000 people died.
Since 1861 the city has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Les Cayes .
