from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maciej Marian Giertych (born March 24, 1936 in Warsaw ) is a Polish forest scientist and politician of the right-wing party League of Polish Families (Liga Polskich Rodzin) and from 2004 to 2009 a non-attached member of the European Parliament .

Live and act

Maciej Giertych studied at Oxford . After graduating in 1958 he worked at the University of Toronto and received there in 1962 with the thesis Endogenous changes in growth regulators in relation to growth and development of red pine a doctoral degree . Back in Poland he worked at the Dendrology Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Kórnik . He obtained his habilitation at the Agricultural Academy of Poznan in 1970 and became an associate professor in 1981 and a full professor in 1989. He gained international fame through his scientific work and was Poland's representative on the international council of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) from 1986 to 1995 . He also received an award from IUFRO for special achievements.

Giertych began his political career with the political change in Poland. From 1990 to 2002 he was chairman of the main board of the National Party (Stronnictwo Narodowe). From 2001 Giertych was on the political council of the League of Polish Families, of which he is vice-chairman.

From 2001 to 2004 he was a member of the Sejm , where he was a member of the Committee on Environmental Protection , Natural Resources and Forestry and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. From 2003 he was an observer in the European Parliament and has been a full member of the European Union since Poland joined the European Union . Giertych was admitted to the fall 2005 presidential election , but withdrew his candidacy before the first round of voting.

Giertych caused a sensation in the European Parliament with a brochure with anti-Semitic content, which he distributed there himself. The President of the Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering , reprimanded Giertych because the brochure showed the Parliament's emblem on the cover and thus linked the anti-Semitic content to Parliament.

He was also noticed by homophobic propaganda . He also compared Chancellor Angela Merkel with Adolf Hitler and accused her of striving for a Europe dominated by Germany. He also praised the role of General Franco and lamented the "lack of such statesmen in Europe today".

Maciej Giertych's son and party colleague is Roman Giertych , who was Polish Minister of Education for a short time from 2006 to 2007. His brother is Wojciech Giertych .

Creationism

Scientifically, Giertych stood out for his crude theses on the doctrine of creation. In various publications he took the view that "racial formation (microevolution)" and "sideways oriented geological layers " are arguments against evolution. He also seems to believe that dinosaurs coexisted with humans.
