Uberlândia , officially Portuguese Município de Uberlândia , is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . Uberlândia is located in the Triângulo Mineiro , the " mining triangle", and is the second largest city in Minas Gerais after Belo Horizonte and the most important economic center of the region.

In 2010, 604,013 people lived in Uberlândia in a large community area of 4115.2 km². The population was estimated on July 1, 2019 at 691,305 inhabitants, who are called Uberlandenses ( uberlandenses ).

The city is the seat of the Diocese of Uberlândia and the home of the Uberlândia EC football club .

Surname

Uberlândia was originally called Uberabinha, but the name became increasingly inappropriate for a rapidly growing city that had become a regional center because it included the diminutive suffix "-inha". Therefore, in 1922 the name was changed to Uberlândia by adding the word “country” in its Portuguese-adapted form.

Local politics

From 2005 to 2012 Odelmo Leão (Odelmo Leão Carneiro Sobrinho) of the Partido Progressista (PP) was city prefect , who was previously and in the meantime also a federal member of the National Congress . In the local elections in 2016 , he was re-elected mayor in his current and third term from 2017 to 2020.
