Nepal Airlines ( Nepali नेपाल वायुसेवा , formerly Royal Nepal Airlines ) is the national airline of Nepal based in Kathmandu and based at Kathmandu Airport .

history

Former Hawker-Siddeley HS 748 for Royal Nepal Airlines in 1986

Nepal Airlines was founded in July 1958 as Royal Nepal Airlines and started operations with a Douglas DC-3 . A few years later, the Fokker F-27 was the first to modernize the fleet with a turboprop model. In 1970 representatives of Air France took over the management of the company and modernized both the management and the fleet: in 1972 the first jets were added, including the Boeing 727 .

In her early years, Royal Nepal Airlines flew to London Heathrow with a stopover in Frankfurt .

After the political developments in 2006 , in which King Gyanendra lost his power, the word royal was removed from the naming of the government, the military , the police and also the airline . It has been called Nepal Airlines since then .

On July 1, 2013, Nepal Airlines ordered two Airbus A320-200s to replace the outdated Boeing 757-200s . On February 9, 2015, the first A320-200 was delivered to Nepal Airlines.

Since November 2013, Nepal Airlines has been on the list of operating bans for the airspace of the European Union together with all other airlines from Nepal due to safety concerns . However, flights to Europe were no longer offered long before that.

Between June and July of 2018, the company added two Airbus A330-200s to its fleet, which will subsequently be used on long-haul flights to Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Europe. However, this did not happen; the two machines were only used on medium-haul routes instead of on long-haul routes, while the Nepalese aviation authority intervened and investigated irregularities in the procurement of the aircraft. Due to the inefficient operation and a lack of staff for the new Airbus A330-200 (aircraft procurement did not go hand in hand with personnel planning for the new type of aircraft), Nepal Airlines announced in November of the same year that they urgently needed financial support from the government. At that point in time, liabilities of approximately $ 360.5 million had accumulated.

Destinations

Nepal Airlines flies from Kathmandu to numerous domestic cities and international destinations in the Middle East as well as in South and East Asia .

  • On September 26, 1992, a Harbin Yunshuji Y-12-II (9N-ACI) operated by Royal Nepal Airlines with 14 people on board broke the nose wheel tire when it took off from Lukla Airport. The nose landing gear broke, the machine collided with a dam outside the runway, was badly damaged and had to be written off. All occupants (2 crew members, 12 passengers) survived.
  • On February 16, 2014, another DHC-6-300 Twin Otter operated by Nepal Airlines (9N-ABB) had an accident in poor weather conditions. She was on the flight from Pokhara to Jumla .
