Kotzebue ( pronunciation: / ˈkɒtsəbjuː / ; Inupiaq Qikiqtaġruk , [qekeqtɑʁʐuk] ) is a city in the Northwest Arctic Borough in the US state of Alaska and is also the administrative seat . It is located at the northern end of the Baldwin Peninsula in Kotzebue Sound . In 2005 the population was 3600 people (1990: 2751, 2000: 3082), of which 70% belong to the indigenous population .

At the beginning of the 21st century, Kotzebue is the largest city in Northwest Alaska and one of the largest and oldest Iñupiat settlements. The city is located on the northwest tip of the Baldwin Peninsula, 42 km north of the Arctic Circle and 906 km as the crow flies from Anchorage . The sun doesn't set here for 36 days in summer.

The "City of Kotzebue" got its name from the strait, the Kotzebuesund , on the coast of which it lies. The sea section is named after its discoverer, the Baltic German Otto von Kotzebue , the leader of the Russian Rurik expedition , which looked for the Northwest Passage there in 1818 .

history

There is archaeological evidence that the Iñupiat people have lived in this place since the 15th century. Its location made it a trading and settlement center for the entire region. The Noatak , Selawik and Kobuk rivers flow into the Kotzebue Sound near the city, making it a center for inland transport. With the arrival of whalers, traders, prospectors and missionaries, the trading base expanded and took the name Qikiqtaġruk (also Kikiktagruk ), which in Iñupiaq means “place shaped like a long island”. The name refers to the almost five kilometers long Baldwin Peninsula, a headland at the tip of which the place was built in the middle of the tundra . Later the name was changed to Kotzebue. In addition to people from the surrounding villages, residents of the Russian Far East came to Kotzebue to trade. In 1899 a US post office was established.

In early September 2015, then US President Barack Obama visited Kotzebue as part of a visit to Alaska. This makes Obama the first President in US history to stay north of the Arctic Circle during his tenure.

economy

Hides, hides, seal fat, weapons and ammunition are some of the goods traded in Kotzebue, and tourism is also an important industry. The holding of reindeer was introduced in the region 1897th Although caribou existed and existed in Alaska , the tame reindeer from Europe were preferred. Kotzebue is the supply center for the ten villages in the area, many of whose inhabitants still live from hunting and berry picking. The city has a police station, a hospital, a prison and an airport.

Attractions

People gather here for competitions like the Eskimo Olympics (World Eskimo Olympics). In the village there is the NANA Museum of the Arctic which shows the culture of the Iñupiat in the form of slide presentations, story telling, drums and dance performances complete the program. The Iñupiat Cultural Camp provides information about the Eskimos' way of life. It introduces their hunting and survival techniques in the wild as well as their typical clothing and traditional cuisine. In Kotzebue Senior Center numerous artifacts are on display, plus there is music and dance performances. The University of Alaska Fairbanks maintains the Chukchi University campus in the city .

Trivia

The feature film Salmonberries ( Percy Adlon , with kd lang ) takes place in Kotzebue, whereby the place name also has a dramaturgical meaning.
