Rahmatou Keïta (* 1957 in Niamey ) is a Nigerien film director , journalist and author . She lives in France .

Life

Rahmatou Keïta comes from a Fulbe - Songhai family. She settled in Paris , where she studied philosophy and linguistics . After completing her studies, she began to work as a journalist, initially for print media and radio stations.

From 1988 Keïta worked as a reporter for French television. For her contributions to the news magazine L'Assiette Anglaise on Antenna 2 , she was awarded the 7 d'or television prize twice. From 1990 to 1992 she shot the documentary series Djassaree about storytellers and griots in Niger for the Nigerien national broadcaster ORTN for its television program Télé Sahel . From 1992 to 1997 she was responsible for the conception, production and presentation of the television magazine Femmes d'Afrique about African women for the Franco-German broadcaster Arte . As Arte-presenter she was also from 1992 to 1993 in the topic series on North-South relations and 1999 in the series rencontre Cinquième: les Français to see. Her book Sans domicile fixe , published in 1993, addresses homelessness and poverty in France from an African perspective.

Keïta subsequently made a name for herself as a director for the cinema and at film festivals . Her short documentary Le nerf de la douleur (1999) was shown at the pan-African film festival FESPACO in Ouagadougou . With Une journée à l'école Gustave Doré (2000), Les états généraux de la Psychanalyse (2001) and J'ai fait le rêve (2003) further documentary directing works followed. She founded her own production company, whose name is on the sunken city in the 16th century with Songhay Empire Productions Songhai Empire refers. Rahmatou Keïta had her international breakthrough as a film director with her first full-length documentary Al'lèèssi ... Une actrice africaine from 2003, on which she had been working since 1998. The film depicts the heyday and decline of the Nigerien film industry based on the life of actress Zalika Souley . Al'lèèssi ... Une actrice africaine was shown at the Berlinale 2004 , the Cannes Film Festival 2005 and other important film festivals. Keïta was Honorary President of the Pan-African Film Festival FESPACO in 2009. At the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 she presented her short film Jìn'naariyâ! in front.
