Zalika Souley (born October 7, 1947 in Niamey ) is a Nigerien actress . She is considered the first professional film actress from sub-Saharan Africa and the star of Nigerien cinema in the 1960s and 1970s.

Life

Zalika Souley began her career as a film actress at the age of 19 in the feature film Le retour d'un aventurier , directed by Moustapha Alassane , where she played the leading role of " Queen Christine ". Subsequently, she worked in several films Moustapha Alassanes and Oumarou Gandas , the two most important directors of Nigerien cinema of the 1960s and 1970s. The decline of Niger's film industry from the 1980s had a negative impact on her career. From 1978 to 1985, Souley worked for the state broadcaster ORTN . She then worked as a telephone operator in a hotel in Niamey. In 1987 she got a job as a consultant at the Center Culturel Djado Sékou in Niamey. Her comeback attempt with the film Mamy Wata (1989) directed by Moustapha Diop flopped.

In the 1990s, Zalika Souley received several honors from Niger and abroad. The Nigerien director Jean-Pierre Kaba shot the documentary Zalika about them . In financial terms, the mother of six remained precarious. In the reign of President Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara , which began in 1996 , she received state grants and subsidies, which were cut after the fall of Baré Maïnassara in 1999. Souley then emigrated to the United States in 2000 , where she kept afloat with various small jobs. In 2003, Al'lèèssi ... Une actrice africaine by the director Rahmatou Keïta was another documentary about the actress, which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005 , among others . Souley returned to Niger in 2009. In 2018 she became the first deputy treasurer of the Fédération des Associations des Cinéastes du Niger , a newly established association of Nigeria's film organizations, chaired by Harouna Niandou .
