Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara

Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara (born May 9, 1949 in Maradi , † April 9, 1999 in Niamey ) was a Nigerien officer and president of the country.

Life

The Ibrahim Baré Mäinassaras family came from Douméga in western Niger. He began his career in the Nigerien armed forces in 1970 and was appointed military attaché at the Nigerien embassy in Paris in 1985. On September 7, 1987, he was appointed Minister of Health and Welfare in the government of Prime Minister Hamid Algabid , of which he was a member until March 10, 1988. From 1988 to 1990 he was Ambassador to France and from 1990 to 1995 Ambassador to Algeria .

Ibrahim Baré Mäinassara deposed the incumbent President of Niger Mahamane Ousmane in a coup on January 27, 1996 . He was elected as a candidate for the National Union of Independents for Democratic Renewal (UNIRD) in the presidential elections on July 7th and 8th, 1996 with a majority of 52% of the vote. This election is widely believed to be fraudulent. Maïnassara was sworn into office on August 7th. On April 9, 1999, he was killed by soldiers at Niamey Airport in the capital during a coup led by Daouda Malam Wanké . Wanké then became his successor.
