Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (* 1977 in Dundrum , Dublin ) is an Irish actor . He gained international fame through the role of the magician Ebony Maw in the Marvel film Avengers: Infinity War .

life and career

Tom Vaughan-Lawlor was born in Dublin, Ireland's capital, where he attended De La Salle College in the Churchtown district . He later graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a degree in drama and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London .

After graduating from the Academy, his career began in the theater, where he toured the United States as a cast member of the Abbey Theater and in plays such as The Quare Fellow , This Lime Tree Bower , The Hero of the Western World , Three Sisters and Saved by Edward Bond . In 2008 he played the role of Lygsrand in The Woman from the Sea and that of the Dauphin in Henry V at the Royal Exchange in Manchester , for which he was awarded the Ian Charleson Award . In 2009, he received the Irish Times Best Actor Theater Award for the first time for his portrayal in Bertolt Brecht's The Temporary Rise of Arturo Ui . In 2014 he was able to win this award again.

Vaughan-Lawlor made his acting debut in front of the camera in 2006 in the Irish film The Tiger's Tail alongside great actors such as Brendan Gleeson , Ciarán Hinds and Sinéad Cusack . A year later she followed the role of Robert Fowle in Beloved Jane , in which Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy also played. From 2010 to 2014 Vaughan-Lawlor played the role of Nigel "Nidge" Delaney in the crime series Love / Hate , for which he was named Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 9th Irish Film & Television Awards in 2012. At the same time during this engagement he continued to appear on numerous theater stages, for example in a West End production of All My Sons or in 2013 in Juno and the Paycock .

He booked other series appearances in Peaky Blinders - Gangs of Birmingham or the political miniseries Charlie , which was based on the life of Charles Haughey , played by Aidan Gillen . In 2016 he took on supporting roles in the films A Hidden Life - The Secret Scripture and The Infiltrator , alongside Bryan Cranston and Diane Kruger . In 2018 and 2019 he took on the role of the magician and Black Order trailer Ebony Maw in the superhero films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame , respectively , which are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe .

Private

Vaughan-Lawlor currently lives in the village of Whitstable in south-east England with his wife, Claire Cox , who is also an actress, and their son Freddie. His father and son both played small roles in Love / Hate .
