Seasons End (English for " end of the seasons ") is the fifth studio album by the British progressive rock band Marillion . It was released in September 1989 as the first album of the Hogarth era . The LP was re-released as a 180 g vinyl pressing in February 2012.

Emergence

In August 1988 frontman Fish and Marillion broke up. The band started looking for a new singer, but was unsuccessful for the time being. John Helmer was hired as copywriter while the band continued to work on new material. Marillion had listened to around 300 application tapes and tested around 30 applicants. In January 1989, Marillion and Steve Hogarth met for an audition . Within a short time Steve Hogarth became a permanent member of the band and also began to change John Helmer's lyrics and write his own.

The King of Sunset Town , originally a text by John Helmer about homelessness in London, was rewritten by Steve Hogarth following the coverage of the Tian'anmen massacre . Deng Xiaoping now became "King", the title was retained. Easter is a song by Hogarth, for which he had the first ideas in early 1988. Musically inspired by the Scottish folk song "The Skye Boat Song" and with references to William Butler Yeats' poem "Easter 1916", a conciliatory song of praise for Ireland was created. The Uninvited Guest , the lyrics are by Helmer, is ostensibly a song about people you don't like to be around, but the “uninvited guest” could also be HIV . A lament about global warming and the loss of cold English winters is Seasons End , the theme song. Holloway Prison is a women's prison in London. The song Holloway Girl is about a woman who doesn't actually belong in prison, but in psychiatry. In Berlin the story of an attempt to escape from the GDR through no man's land is told.

Single releases

The first single was released in August 1989, Hooks in You with the B-side After Me , which reached 30th place in the UK singles chart. The second single The Uninvited Guest , released in November 1989 with the B-side The Bell in the Sea , reached number 53 on the UK charts. The third single Easter with the B-side The Release was released in March 1990 and reached number 34 on the UK charts.

Steve Hogarth versus Fish is the dominant theme of almost all reviews of this album, with vastly different results. progreviews.com: Marillion was a good band that Fish made great - Steve Hogarth misses the magic. progarchives.com: Unlike the early Marillion, it's still excellent. progressiveworld.net: Hogarth's soulful, heartfelt vocals, especially at Seasons End and Easter , make me love this Marillion as much as the old Marillion. BBS:… the vocals blow one away quite a bit compared to before… A successful album by a band that was clearly looking for a new style!
