Misplaced Childhood (English for. " Misplaced childhood ") is the third studio album by British progressive rock band Marillion . It was released in mid- 1985 and is the band's most commercially successful album to date. With Lavender and, above all, Kayleigh, it contains the two most successful singles Marillions.

background

Misplaced Childhood is Marillion's first concept album . In addition, after their first two albums were recorded in London and their later albums are mainly produced in Aylesbury to this day, it was the first and to date only album of the group recorded in Germany ( West Berlin ). It contains a collection of thoughts, memories and feelings, especially those relating to childhood and adolescence in Edinburgh, Scotland . It is characterized by large mood swings between euphoria and depression. The album is shaped by the singer Fish , who was responsible for the concept of the album. Thematically, the album deals with motifs from forgiven love, sudden success, acceptance and lost childhood. Despite all the problems, the album ends optimistically. A complete live recording of the album, recorded on the Misplaced Childhood tour, appeared on the 1988 album The Thieving Magpie .

On October 17, 1998 Misplaced Childhood appeared as the fifth of a total of eight Marillion albums from 1983 to 1995 as a 24-bit remaster, which was released in a double CD version. The digitally revised version of the album has only been sold without an additional CD since 2001.

In 2017 the album was released together with four CDs, which u. a. Live recordings include, as BR-Audio with a 5.1 version mixed by Steven Wilson , a remastered version and a mixdown from 5.1 to stereo, each in 24 bit / 96 kHz.

Singles and Videos

In April 1985, almost two months before the album was released, the album's first single, Kayleigh , was released . The single contained the song Lady Nina as the B-side, the single version by Kayleigh is half a minute shorter than the album version and was mainly shortened in the guitar solo. In addition, the song Lavender , which in turn is longer in its single version than on the album, appeared together with the song Freaks . The third single was Heart of Lothian , with a live version of Chelsea Monday as the b-side. Associated music videos were also made for all three singles.
