David Dabede Mabuza (born August 25, 1960 in Brondal near Nelspruit ) is a South African politician ( African National Congress ). He has been Vice President of South Africa since 2018. He was Prime Minister of Mpumalanga Province from 2009 to 2018, and in 2017 he was elected Vice Chairman of the ANC.

Life

Mabuza studied between 1983 and 1985 at Mgwenya College of Education , where he was qualified to teach , and from 1984 to 1989 at the University of South Africa , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . During his student days he was Secretary of the Azanian Students Organization (AZASO) and Chairman of the National Education Union of South Africa (NEUSA). After graduation, he worked as a teacher and headmaster of the Lungisani Secondary School and was chairman of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU). In 1994 Mabazu became regional chairman of the African National Congress (ANC) and at the same time a member of the executive council for education in Mpumalanga Province. In 1998 he became a member of the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC, and in 2001 he was given a seat in the National Assembly . He has been a member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Government since 2004, was elected provincial chairman in 2008 and Prime Minister of Mpumalanga in 2009; he has been a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee since 2007.

Mabuza is considered an influential politician in the province and in the ANC, especially due to his close relationship with Jacob Zuma , whose two-time election as President of the ANC he supported.

On December 18, 2017, Mabuza was elected Deputy President as deputy to Cyril Ramaphosa at the ANC party conference . He beat Minister Lindiwe Sisulu with around 54% of the vote . On February 26, 2018, he became Vice President of the Republic of South Africa and thus Ramaphosa's deputy at party level. He resigned as Prime Minister Mpumalanga on February 27, 2018. In May 2019 he was confirmed as Vice President.

Mabuza is married to Nonhlanhla Patience Mnisi.
