Peter "Pete" Trewavas (born January 15, 1959 in Middlesbrough , North Yorkshire as Peter John Trewavas ) is a British musician . He is the bass player for the progressive rock bands Marillion and Transatlantic .

biography

He spent much of his childhood in Aylesbury , Buckinghamshire . It was there that he gained his first musical experience. At a young age, Trewavas took clarinet lessons for a few years and played second clarinet in the school orchestra. He was later active in various bands, especially with The Metros , with whom he recorded the album Driving Us Crazy and in 1982 appeared in New York as the opening act for Duran Duran . In the same year he joined the British neo-prog band Marillion , where he took over from Diz Minnett as bassist , which he still holds today.

In 1986 he played on the album Feedback by former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett as a guest musician . With Ian Mosley from Marillion and the French guitarist and pianist Sylvain Gouvernaire he recorded the instrumental album Crossing the Desert under the name Iris in 1996 . Also as a guest musician Trewavas played in 1996 on the album Carnival of Souls by The Wishing Tree , a project of his Marillion bandmate Steve Rothery . In 2000 he played for Ian Mosley & Ben Castle on the album Postmankind .

Trewavas has also been a member of the progressive rock supergroup Transatlantic since 2000 , which he founded with Neal Morse (formerly at Spock's Beard ), Roine Stolt ( The Flower Kings ) and Mike Portnoy (formerly at Dream Theater ). With Transatlantic he has released three studio and three live albums so far. In 2004 he founded the neo-prog band Kino with John Mitchell ( Arena ), John Beck, Bob Dalton (both It Bites ) and Chris Maitland (ex- Porcupine Tree ) . The debut album Picture was released in 2005.

Trewavas also played in ProgAID, the benefit project for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake . The accompanying EP ProgAID - All Around The World was released in 2005. In 2007 he was a guest musician with the English progressive rock band Big Big Train on the album The Difference Machine .

For several years he has been playing isolated acoustic concerts on a small scale with Steve Rothery and Steve Hogarth from Marillion under the name Los Trios Marillos, on which mainly Marillion songs are played.

In 2006 Trewawas founded the formation Edison's Children with guitarist Eric Blackwood . In November 2011 the first CD entitled "In The Last Waking Moments" was released.

Pete Trewavas is married and has two children.

Musical work

Although he is primarily a bass guitarist, he also plays bass pedals and has composed keyboard parts for Transatlantic. He also occasionally plays electric guitar and acoustic guitar on some Marillion songs (e.g. "Faith" and "Now She'll Never Know") and does backing vocals . He can also be heard as lead singer in the demo version of a cinema song on the album Cutting Room Floor and in the Transatlantic song "Lending A Hand" on the bonus CD for The Whirlwind .

When asked about artists who inspired or influenced him, he names Paul McCartney , John Lennon , Chris Squire and Mike Rutherford . Trewavas describes his bass playing less as style-oriented, more as feeling-oriented. In an interview he said: “I really just kind of got into listening to music and stuff, trying to evolve. For me, it's not about styles - it's about feel. "
