Peter Gabriel is the 1977 published the first solo album by Peter Gabriel . It contains Gabriel's first solo hit Solsbury Hill and peaked at number 7 in the UK and 38 in the US.
Recordings
Recordings began a year after Peter Gabriel left Genesis .
Gabriel was happy with the music but thought the album was overproduced - especially "Here Comes The Flood". Gabriel often played the song live, often only accompanying himself on the piano, sometimes he sang the title in German.
Cover
The photo on the cover shows Peter Gabriel in the passenger seat of a Lancia Flavia owned by Storm Thorgerson , Hipgnosis co-founder and designer of the cover.
reception
Rolling Stone's Stephen Demorest described the album as "a grabber box of songs that have little to do with each other" and still praised it as an "impressively rich debut album". Robert Christgau of The Village Voice noted that "every time I dig into his challenging lyrics to decipher a line or two, I get a little short."
