Solsbury Hill is a 1977 song by Peter Gabriel that he wrote after leaving Genesis . It was his debut single as a solo artist.

Content and meaning

The song is about the climb up the Solsbury Hill near Bath ( county Somerset , UK ), where Gabriel was staying at the time. The “I” narrator is a man who has a spiritual experience climbing the mountain.

Gabriel said about his song:

"It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get ... It's about letting go."

The song is mostly in 7/4 time, only at the end of each stanza there is a change to a single 8/4 time.

In October 2011, a new orchestral recording of the song was released as a bonus track on Peter Gabriel's album New Blood .
